Discussion about
Hi, are coops required by law to have smoke detectors in any of these areas - main lobby where the elevator is, inside the elevator, stairwells, hallway areas out outside of apartments, basements? Am looking at a building and it has no smoke detectors anywhere. If this is out of code it worries me about possibly buying here. Would love if anyone can also point me to specific laws on this. THANKS!!

Bruce - sorry, Catlin - why don't you call the fire department and have them show up and check it out. I'm sure that the building will appreciate your intentions.

I believe the only requirement is that smoke/CO detectors be correctly placed within the apartments themselves (a certain distance from doorways to bedrooms) but are not required in common areas of the building.
