One dog permitted - what about cats?

On several listings we have found "one dog permitted." While we do plan to ask at every apartment we wish to see, I was just curious how that translates to cats, in general. Should we assume that they would also limit cats in the house to one? Are coop boards in general easier with cat owners? And while we're on the subject, I have read that occasionally a board (particularly one that pets are "subject to approval") would want to meet your pet before they approve it. I assume that's only for dogs. What do they generally look for when approving a cat or cats.
