Discussion about 49 West 72nd Street #16A
Priced too high for an apartment under 500 sq ft. Wondering if this was originally a studio converted to a one bedroom...
Look at the layout. The is no way this was a studio with the bathroom in the middle of it.
This was most likely carved out of a larger apartment many years ago. But was never a studio.

AFAIK the A-line in this building was constructed that way and not carved out of anything bigger. The tiny kitchen footprint may hearken back to a time when all you were really expected to do in a kitchen was make coffee, mix drinks, and maybe scramble an egg; likely the residents of such a building would have taken most of their meals elsewhere.
What is AFAIK?
BTW, you can easily cook in this size kitchen but can not get fancy with multiple dishes at the same time. Then the apartment is meant just for 1 person or at most a couple.
Front Porch you are onto something with the kitchen. I remember this building and that space that you see is where the stainless kitchenette went across that back wall. Those were the days of half fridges. Notice if you look at the floor plan, the fridge now will go next the oven which is out of the area.
AFAIK = As Far As I Know
Thanks. I had to google it.
Twice as I forgot what it meant within an hour.
Many Prewar buildings were built as "apartment-hotels" with a zoning bonus given for doing so. Certain amenities had to be included in the building like dining rooms for the residents. For example take a look at 155/1265 West 20th St vs 200 West 20th St - built the same time but the former as a 6 story apartment building, full kitchens, etc. and the latter as a 15 story apartment-hotel.
I lived in the building for many years and as far as I know this is the original layout. The A line apartments are for sure slightly smaller that the B line apartments. There is a B line one currently on sale on the 12th floor which was also completely renovated. You can check floor plans for size comparison. If it helps I personally think that the 12B renovation is a little better than the one that was done on the 16A.
