Back to Risers for a tub

Discussion about
I am trying to understand what exactly "back to the risers" entails when installing a new bathtub. For showers I have always taken out all drain pipes back to the main drain that comes into the apartment. However with a tub, is taking out the tub and leaving the drain pipe in place considered "back to the risers"? The building requires "back to the risers" for all plumbing renovation. Thank you in advance for any insight.

Unless the trap under the tub empties right into the vertical drain pipe that serves everybody in that section, 'back to the risers' usually means all the horizontal pipe from the tub fitting to the vertical riser connection. (which can be a big drag, as access may have to be from the unit downstairs).

Aaron, you're correct, we're having to break through the subfloor to access the horizontal pipes and replace. Thank you.
