Are they really space saving unless you are thinking of one on top of a bed?

Yes, because you can take them down when not in use... I don't have one, by the way.

Did this story ever happen? Sounds interesting! Would be neat to see one in all the wasted space in a loft style unit which doesn't have a second level.
