Discussion about
Gotta say, I don't like it. Too much white space, too many pictures. The double spacing of text is unnecessary, the 'just updated' flag is unnecessary if the list is sorted by most recent update, boxing each comment as a 'card' doesn't add anything, and the top 1/3 of the screen is filled with a static graphic, further reducing available reading space. At least the box for entering discussions is finally a reasonable size. The rest of it: Blech.
I'm with you, I liked the old school (even if dated) style we had before, it was easier to read way more comments all at once. Now you have to scroll for each comment that's a paragraph long...
The new format is a lot of white space and definitely inferior to the old. I was hoping they would incorporate a spell check, and the ability to see all your old posts and those you commented on in one place. I predict they will turn off many of the old timers and have even less traffic then they have now. Interesting they didn't ask for suggestions before going to a new format.
The new format is difficult to read in a flash- too spread out. I am not interested in every thread, and the old format allowed me to scan the conversations quickly. This format requires me to scroll and scroll and scroll. Change can be good, and the old format was due for some upgrades- but this one requires some additional follow through.
Yeah--not crazy about this new format.
The original post repeating as the first reply is driving me crazy already.
amen
... and the "Most Popular" discussions are all 8+ years old!
Further to this, the 'Most Popular' list to the left of the discussions shows a thread "Middle Class in NYC" in which the latest post was 8 years ago. What is the criteria for 'most popular' anyway? I'd suggest that it must include a consideration of 'timely'. These are principally *discussion* boards after all.
Also, when looking through 'multi-page' threads such as the one cited, there is no longer any way to jump to the end of the thread -- instead you have to go to the bottom of the page and select 'Next' at each page.
I should have been a UX tester.
I don't like it either but I expect it will grow on me. I remember the furore the last time the format was changed, but now I can't even remember what the one before last looked like...
My suggestions:
- Posts should be sorted in reverse chronological order, from most recent to least recent. It is annoying to have to scroll down to the end to see the most recent posts when revisiting a thread.
- As others have mentioned, the text should be single-spaced, so it is more compact. It is far too spread out now.
New format is not the greatest. Perhaps suggestions should have been sought before changes took place.
I'm not a big fan of having to click "load more" to see more than 5 or so posts...
Clearly all the white space on the right is for advertising. Don’t be surprised if you see that added shortly. SE has gone wat down since Zillow took over. This is no longer a site for New Yorkers or those trying to find a New York apt. SE has never responded to the issue of links no longer working to past sales...again, no longer a friendly site to purchasers or investors. Would be great to see a competitor site built.
Yeah, I agree, totally not a fan of the 'Load More' button. Very annoying, especially for discussions with hundreds of comments. Lots of clicking just to view the most recent.
With the load more button just FYI, it's impossible to peruse the popular threads with hundreds of comments. I think you'd have to click load for quite a while. In which case you just don't visit those threads by default...
I liked the old format better
Craigslist is the only that gets it and thats why they'll be the last one to disappear.
