I've been a big supporter of streeteasy since 2008. They really led the way in helping change the way real estate deals get done in New York City. I don't think saying they revolutionized the process of buying for consumers is too strong a term to use. I think there were some bad business decisions made recently regarding handling listings. I think it's still a great site but if you don't have all the New York City sales listings under your roof, you're losing a lot of credibility. Previously I told clients "the only place you need to search is streeteasy, they have 99.9% of all the available listings". Unfortunately I can't really say that anymore. Keith,
I agree that Streeteasy has added a lot of transparency for the consumers (except for misleading "Contact Agent" button). I do not think there is any thing wrong with Streeteasy wanting to make money by charging for the rental listings. The amount of charge will eventually be determined by the market. Current charge seems to be a bit higher than the market will bear long-term.
However, I have yet to see a competing website which is half as good. OLR website public version was terrible. Will see how this one is.
Which site do you recommend?
Hard to recommend another site other than maybe the New York Times to capture what's not on streeteasy? I agree there's nothing wrong with making money. However I think they made a bad business decision. This will ultimately hurt the Integrity of the site. The issue now for the consumer is they don't know if they're capturing all of the available sales listings when they look on streeteasy; that's a big problem.
I'm guessing most individual agents at firms that are no longer supporting the feed will post their sales listings directly, as you're correct there is no better portal out there. The problem is we don't know that for sure.
Remember the history of Street Easy, this was a site built by a man that was frustrated with the status quo in The Brokerage business. Initially agents and Brokers despised streeteasy. Seeing there was no stopping it The Brokerage Community (wisely)embraced it and then slowly but surely when Zillow took over the monetization began. It went from a sort of Grassroots website to a corporate entity making financial decisions based on the best interest of their shareholders. When they got just a little bit too greedy The Brokerage Community quickly pounced on them.
As my grandfather liked to say, if it ain't broken, leave it alone.

Do you have to be a subscriber to NY Times to access the listings?
I only track a few narrow prime geographies and in the <$1m but I have yet to see a listing on NYT that wasn't on streeteasy.
I think the left-facing bracket kills messages on this board--that comment was:
I only track a few narrow prime geographies in the under-1M range but I've yet to see a listing on NYT that wasn't on streeteasy.
As a layperson I don't have much to go off here. But it seems like StreetEasy got greedy and therefore the NYC real estate community decided to fight back in a major way? From my vantage point it sounds like StreetEasy got greedy and took their #1 market share for granted!
That's good to hear pier45. Do others feel like they're capturing all available listings?

I know I have been seeing announcements of deals closing on sites like Curbed where the listing is from one of the agencies which said they were no longer sending their listings to SE, and it only shows up on SE as a clsoing (but there was no listing). Example:
http://www.townrealestate.com/sale/id-358013/153-Franklin-Street-Townhouse/TriBeCa/Manhattan/bedrooms-4/status-closed/
https://streeteasy.com/building/153-franklin-street-manhattan#tab_building_detail=2
This appears to be an off market deal, I wonder if Town was the listing broker? Looks like a pop diva purchased this in October..

Good to see some competition coming out ... when is Realtor.com online for NYC?
