Grandfathering enclosed porch with DOB?

I have a porch that was enclosed in the 1980s by my buildings original sponsor. From what I understand, at the time, it was fine to enclose porches as long as it was done to the standards of the time (mine was). The DOB is making us take the enclosure down. Has anyone petitioned something like this on a "grandfather" clause? How long did it take? Did you win?
