Lighting recommendations

I'm considering installing low profile overhead LED lights throughout my apt. The issue is that the apt is postwar construction with concrete slabs between floors, and the board will not allow any channeling into the slab. As I already have only 8 foot ceiling heights, I want to install low profile lights (I understand they can now come in as thin as one inch or so fixtures). I'm looking for any ideas or recommendations from anyone who has had this work done. Thanks.
