Discussion about
Are their names and email contacts supposed to be available to all residents of the building? Thank you.
I'm not sure you could make the argument that info should be available to renters.
Agree. Are they supposed to be available to all owners or shareholders? Who usually provides that? Super or the Managing Agent?
This is just my personal opinion, but if you have any trouble getting a list of board members it's time to both start lobbying to elect an entirely new board and then immediately fire the managing agent.
Thank you. Makes sense.
I live in a medium-sized co-op, so I know where all my board members live, but some of them don't provide their email addresses, so queries to the board either go through the managing agent, or through a general, anonymized email ("board@co-op").
Ali, Are their names circulated to the residents when they are elected and otherwise?
I would say names: Yes; email address: No. Managing agent should provide upon request.
In my large-ish building (~230 units) all questions for the board go to the managing agent. Names of all board members are listed in the annual meeting documents, and most give their apartment #s in the mini bios they submit when they're running for election. If I need to contact one, and don't want to go through the managing agent, I write a note, put the board member's name on the envelope, and hand it to whomever is on the front desk, who will put it in the appropriate mailbox.
Thank you. Going through managing agent does not work if you have issues with the managing agent. I just got the name of the president from front desk.
@300, their names are circulated but not their emails or apartment numbers (which I think is just ridiculous, especially since my co-op isn't very large -- it isn't that tough to run into a board member in the hallway or figure out that Board Member X lives in #4B).
Once you have a name, in most cases you can find them on LinkedIn or easy enough to do what Aaron suggested. I can understand people not providing their apartment number as some one crazy may knock at your door even though in a coop as a shareholder you have a right to know who leases which apartment.
So, I asked the managing agent for board members names and I am getting the run around - will need to check with the board etc. I think it is a case of board not wanting to be bothered at all and delegating everything to the managing agent - a big liability for the board in my opinion to have managing agent make all decisions.
As a shareholder you have the right to know the names of current board members. There's no excuse for any 'run-around'. Do you have minutes from the most recent shareholders' meeting? Elected board members' names should be noted there.
You have a problem. Don't ignore it. Yes, it's a PITA being a Board Member - so if you don't want to do the work don't be one. GTF out of the way and let someone who does in. A lot of times this indicates a building where Board Members are only on the Board for their own personal issue (like getting an upcoming renovation done without having to get the proper approvals) and don't care about running in the building. And then the matter gauges gets sloppy because they know no one is watching.
In my last building there was a bill for an elevator repair in the monthly expenses statement. The building's had no elevator. I waited 3 months to see if anyone else would say anything, but of course I was the only one looking.
Squid, Apprently for condo unit owners, there may be grey area and managing agents will stonewall you.
Any lawyers on the board about what the law says about managing agent having to disclose the board names to the shareholders? Thank you.

Yes I was referring only to co-op.
30, Thank you very much for the links. Very helpful. While it does not say that the names of the board members need to be available to unit holders, one can infer that from the court decisions.
30, Thank you again. I found these to be some of the most helpful links on this message board. Many condo and coop owners are bullied and stonewalled by the managing agent and the links you posted clearly show the legal precedence clarifying legal rights of the unit owners.
300,
You're welcome. I repeat my second comment in this thread.
That makes sense for a long term resident but for me it is much easier to know my rights legally and convey my legal standing to the board and managing agent.
