Discussion about
What do you do when dealing with a bad contractor? Project takes twice as long, work not done to plan, and quality is really poor? What recourse or remedies are there without them placing a lien? What agencies are there to support the home owners interests in a situation like this? I am at a major loss here.

Are you using an architect? If so, they should be able to guide you.

There's a lot you can do. Go after their license.

The issue with that is poor quality (poor paint job, less than perfect kitchen cabinets) unless there is a functioning issue (leak in the bathroom etc, faucets do not work) is hard to prove. They can also place a mechanics lien on the property to get paid. Better to sort it out amicably via architect even if it costs you a little extra.

I can sympathize. Had horrible reno. The NYC dept of consumer affairs was very helpful. Long process, but received $$$ from a fund they have for consumers that are wronged. And it doesn't cost anything. I can give you all the details. Unfortunately, I became a pro and well versed about renos and filing complaints. Don't mind sharing what I learned/know. If you want I can email/call you.

Coopmerger,

I assume you tried to work it out with the contractor? Does he think he did a good job? Are they "finished"?

Getting a new contractor to come in and work on another GC's project is a nightmare for them and will charge accordingly

Do you know what subs he used? I would try to find out who they are and how much were they paid
Apt55 is right, the best recourse is going through the dept of consumer affairs.

I would not want to finish their job but I will try to help you if you would like.

You can email me at jeff@primerenovationsnyc.com
