Heat and AC are the biggest problems with power bills. How well insulated are the windows, and how much does mom run the climate control?

My latest ConEd statement had a blurb about being able to get past utility bills for a property you're looking at buying or renting. I'd start there.

Depends on heating unit, level of insulation, how well sealed the windows are, etc.

I’ve seen electric heat cost $500+/mo.

Get bills for last year or whatever window they can provide.

You can call Con Ed and provide your prospective apartment address and unit and ask what the apartment’s electricity consumption is. They can’t disclose how much previous electrical bills were in the apartment but they can disclose the monthly average of the amount of electricity consumed in the past year in that apartment. Which you could easily translate to a dollar value plugging those numbers into your current Con Ed bill
