Discussion about
Considering the purchase of a typical 650sq ft 1 bedroom in 'cookie cutter layout'(Rectangle floorplan with wall between LR/BR and pass through kitchen, 8ft ceilings, etc). Anyone have examples of work that was performed that created some wow factor with the space (moving walls, kitchen layout, etc)?
There's not much you can do with that layout. Since the kitchen is small, high end appliances and cabinetry will be worth the extra cost. Those apts usually have a nice sized closet nr the front door and a walk-in clost in the bedroom. Try to maximize your storage space with Elfa or Ikea shelving. Add some tasteful window treatments and you're done.
Actually, there's quite a lot that one can do with this format. I had (with Lightandairdesign@gmail.com help) one of my apt. redone and was absolutely astinished with possiblilities.
There's only so much you can do realistically with that space. Yes, if you spend a crazy amount of money on a designer and furnishings, it will be a nicer place to live, just the same if you spent it on a 1200 sq-ft apt. You won't get 900 sq-ft out of your 650 no matter how much money you put into it. The layout itself is quite efficient as is. Use KISS as a guide.
Wow factor can be created based not on amount of cash but on imagination and skills. It can be created from anything, given the proper attention. BradNY, go for it!
I personally would not live in an 8 footer if I didn't have to. I wrote off many buildings during my search because of ceiling height and found my current apt at 10 ft. You may not notice the difference going from low to high, but moving from high to low, you'll feel closterphobic. I say don't go for it. You get more cubic feet with higher ceilings. Storage that goes from floor to ceiling is wonderful! Yes, you can work with 8 feet, but why not work with more? It will be THAT much better.
I really think there is nothing worse than living in a building with 8 foot ceilings.
You'd live in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world, with access to all that NYC offers, but then come home to 8 foot ceilings.
Only thing worse than 8 foot ceilings is being a long-term renter.
