KIDNAPPING at GUNPOINT of US FEDERAL PROSECUTOR AT GOLD COAST 10th Street 5th Ave

Discussion about
A U.S. Federal Prosecutor was kidnapped, at gunpoint, by three teenage hoodlums on one of the nicest, most expensive areas of New York City's in Greenwich Village at 10th Street and 5th Avenue. 10th Street between 5th and 6th has some of the most expensive townhouse brownstones in NYC. Does this kidnapping indicate a long decline for the real estate in that area and petrified residents? Here's the link to the incident: http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/26584/

Isn't that right by the projects at 835th St. and Avenue F?

Another I'm-not-saying-black related violent crime wave!

NY will never attract the gentry at this pace. Chicago/Singapore/Salt Lake City are much better -- my imaginary friends there have fun.

rufus, you're really an ass:

"Just before midnight on January 21, 1998, then–federal prosecutor Stanley Alpert was forced into a Lexus on 10th Street and Fifth Avenue by three teenagers."

Let's see, there was the St. Valentine's Day massacre in Chicago - making it AN UNDESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE.

this is ironic.

(steve did you not see the irony in the post or suspect that rufusdufus might not be rufus?)

I lived in the East 60's off Fifth from 76-91. My friend was attacked by a man with a 25 pound steel bat in 85. Guess that meant everybody should have fled what was then the richest zip code in the city and maybe the country. Damn we didn't think straight and didn't run to the media
Crime happens.

In the comments section of an article in The Times yesterday I noticed what seemed to be an organized attack on city projects saying all the things rufus has been saying

A kidnapping of one person doesn't make a crime wave.

Uh, unless I am missing something, that event took place back in 1998 and he is now releasing a book about his experience.

yes, I did see the year, that is why it is ironic. I think they were making fun of rufus for posting bad news and saying that indicates a decline in NY. The article is from 1998, and clearly that specific area (and the rest of NY) did extremely well after 1998 until the past year or so

the difference in crime between NYC and Chicago is that you can easily avoid violent crime in Chicago if you live in a decent area. the odds of getting mugged, raped, or beaten, in lincoln park or gold coast is almost zero. in NYC however, due to all the projects in manhattan, you can be a victim in lower east side, east village, chelsea, upper west side, or a number of other "nice" neighborhoods.

the overall crime rate is higher in Chicago, but they're basically all in the far west and far south side. as i said before, you can easily avoid crime in Chicago by living in a decent area. the same cannot be said for NYC. this is the result of having too many housing projects near luxury apartments and the city's failure to fully gentrify.

Simply avoid people of color who wear Nike Air Force One sneakers, New Era "59Fifty" flat brimmed baseball caps (sizing sticker should still be affixed to the cap's brim), rope satchel backpacks, knee length oversized white t-shirts emblazoned with Warner Brothers cartoons, Timberland boots, and Tommy Hilfiger jeans. If you avoid anyone wearing any part of the aforementioned, your safety is assured.

For those who skimmed, OP is not rufus, but a rufus-mocker.

Patrick_Bateman, you have to add " . . . or is OJ Simpson . . ."

Dude, it happened 10 years ago. How's that "indicate a long decline for the real estate in that area and petrified residents"???

What a waste of time.

Aww, what's the matter, unmanned? Dog died? Girlfriend kicked you out again? Boss serving up a pink slip with your name on it?

You just go right ahead and let it all out. We're here for you.

"what's the matter, unmanned?"

I think it's pretty clear what happened - he's been unmanned. Neutered. He's now a "post-op"...

I once saw a random act of kindness in Washington Sq. Park on Oct. 6, 2005. The next day real estate values within a 2 block radius rose 3%. Coincidence? I think not.

Is a "post-op" sort of like a "co-op", only later?

If we don't protect our planet from Martians, this type of unmitigated audacity will happen again. At least direct the traffic from Mars to the outer boroughs!
