I've lived in Midtown for the past 8 years. And am looking to move, either to a hipper neighborhood or a larger place.

Before 9-11 prices were cheaper here. Then people got scared of downtown, driving up demand here.

Plenty of people choose to live here to be close to work. And in my building, there's tons of really really old widows who were bequeathed their late husband's condo, and have been living here since. Widows of doctors, lawyers & diplomats who worked in Midtown.

Midtown can be extremely convenient, but as a neighborhood it blows big fat hairy chunks.

I live a few blocks north of the Platinum. The neighborhood definitely lacks for hipness, though convenience to work, subway connections and proximity to the park are all big pluses. Unless you're a huge theater buff, I think you'd find a more pleasant neighborhood feel (relatively speaking) further up eighth avenue, as the high 40s are very congested, especially around broadway showtimes.

I moved to the West 50s five years ago -- it's an incredibly convenient neighborhood, not as vibrant as the West 40s, but still with the access to restaurants and nightlife that made it seem like Chelsea fifteen years ago. Plus, it was cheap because the schools aren't good.

As prices have soared, the neighborhood is not the value that it used to be, but it is nice to be near the park.

why anyone would want to live in Times Square is beyond me. But if you're planning to rent for 2 years maximum or use it as a pied a terre, and you crave the "excitement" of that area, i guess it makes some sense.
