I love Brazilian cherry! It's gorgeous but the red might give it a "warm" feeling that doesn't fit a loft. Go to an open house for Penthouse B in the Rhapsody building at 2056 Fifth Avenue for a great example.

I've seen some really slick places like 20 Pine and 254 Park Avenue South use ebonized oak. You can't get any dark than this, it's blacker than Obama blinking at midnight.

I think walnut has lots of rings or veins in the wood ... more of a ... ummm ... woodsy feel. Like you see how organic it is. Not sure if that would go in a loft either.

Another popular choice for lofts is polished concrete. Very hip looking but not cozy to live in if you ask me.

Yep--Brazilian cherry has been so overused in every tacky new development and condo conversion that it'll make any space look cheap and cheesy and oh so last year. You're wise to look for a fresher alternative.

Just to consider before going with dark floor: every spec of dust, any light hairs from pets or people, most dirt will show starkly on the floor. When immaculate they look okay if you like the aesthetic. But for the way most people actually live, darker floors always make it look like the place needs a vacuuming, IMO.

You have to be careful with some of the darker woods as well that they don't age differently in the spots that were covered versus the spots that were not covered. Whe you go to sell your place or move furniture around there can be a large "mark" on the floor that is a different shade than the rest of the floor.
