Why is NYC architecture so inferior to Chicago?

Discussion about
How did NYC fall so far behind Chicago when it comes to buildings? It's funny that they're letting a midwestern city beat it in a category that they are supposed to dominate.

it's ok. Chicago is superior to NYC in so many ways that a lot of people have a tough time talking about it.

ruf: sorry, but no one here cares. Almost no one on this bd will leave NY for Chi. Why do you persist? We don't care.

Chicago is very nice with great people, but there is no doubt the rest of the world considers NY a world city. People talk of London, Paris, NY, Sydney, Tokyo and maybe Singapore in the same sentence.
Chicago is more in the same league as Miami, Manchester, Melbourne. So there is no point comparing apples with oranges.

Is that why Chicago is ranked #8 on the global cities list, even though it's a lot smaller than cities like NYC, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong?

Chicago has some of the best architecture, food, opportunities, and nightlife, among any major city. It is a true world city.

let's recap:

More people killed in Chicago this past summer then Iraq
Chicago's nickname is "Beirut by the Lake" because of the alarming murder rate
Chicago education scores equivalent to those of Jordan and Cyprus
Chicago is the most polluted city in the US
Chicago is the most stressful city in the US
Chicago is considered the biggest "nanny-state" city in the US
Chicago has consistently been ranked one of the fattest cities in the US
Chicago falls behind NY in a recent global city study
The Michelin Guide does not review any Chicago restaurants
Chicago has a serious gang problem

These are all backed by studies, news articles, reports, etc.

Compare that to Rufus who posts the same old baseless claims like "upscale restaurants", "better architecture", "better nightlife", blah, blah, blah...

Rufus - I am just telling you that the rest of the world considers a nice little town but not really of worldwide consequence. It may be a nice place but its not a global city. When foreigners come to America, they want to visit NY, LA, Miami, and SF. Sorry mate, thats just how it is.

You ought to travel outside the US and maybe you would get a more accurate perspective.

kspeak, i'm willing to bet my life that i'm more well-travelled than you or any other douchebag on this board. it's precisely because i've travelled so much that i believe NYC is dirty and overrated, and that Chicago is the ideal city in a number of ways.

Cracker Boy, frequent visits to Branson, Missouri don't entirely count as "well-traveled". Nor do hallucinatory side-effects from your psychotropic therapies. But keep trying them. Maybe something will work.

alanhart, i've been to more than 30 countries. and i can say with certainty that NYC is dirtier than any major city in the United States, Europe, or Asia.

While it's technically true, Cracker Boy, that each of the 50 states of the US is a state (country), we don't normally mean those when we say "country." So you've been to more than 30 states, probably because you were roped into that weird magazine-sales cult, but that doesn't make you qualified to judge major cities in Asia or The Europe. Nor in the United States, for that matter.

Find a job.

And then his older brother threw the RISK board at him.

Rufus makes some pretty blatant mistakes about well, every city he's mentioned (Rio as a model was my favorite)... so I think he's just lying.

Notice he didn't claim England. Because Chicago is better than London, too.

nyc10022, when did i ever mention Rio as a model? i said the city has major crime and poverty, which is one reason why it will not win the Olympics bid.

It still amazed me that he lies so much... when he knows we'll catch it.

You think he gets free bad pizza with every post he makes (from the Chicago tourism council).

Or, is he just trying to lower prices in Manhattan so he can finally afford the apartment he really wants.

If "woman of size" is your goal, you're not doing very well.

I'm not sure rufus and carol are compatible ... one is crazy, and the other is mental.

Oh Alan you have made my day, weekend, month.... remind me to find out you favorite type of cookies and bring a dozen to the next meet up. (Maybe I'll even bake but GOD WILLING I really would like to have a job).
I think Carol and Rufus would be perfect for each other (assuming Carol is a woman and Rufus is straight neither of which I'm at all sure of...now watch the gay guys give me a bazillion reasons why someone as nasty as Rufus couldn't possibly be gay). Talk about the ultimate domanitrix/slave relationship. She can rant and curse and he can blither and cringe forever. But they have to live near the projects!

THe Chicago Tribune building is one of my favorites. I do love the bi level streets as well, something New York sorely needs. And the chop salads in most of their restaurants are great.

But it is so unbelievably cold, the cops are most certainly the mafia, and the unions run everything else. That think they do to the water on St Paddy's Day is quite creepy too.
