I moved to Brooklyn Heights from the West Village twelve years ago. Its a great neighborhood. It has some beautiful homes (many of them landmarked), the promenade, great playgrounds and schools (both public and private), easy subway access to Manhattan, basic amenities like grocery stores, and a real neighborhood feel. That said, there are some negatives - parking on the street is pretty much impossible, and the restaurant and retail options on Montague Street are woefully limited. (For better shopping & eating out options, I'd recommend walking over to Smith Street - it's about a 15-20 minute walk from the Heights, depending on where you are).
