Discussion about
What is the going rate for tipping the doorman and super these days. We move in the building around September of 08. The building has about 300 units. Should I take the number of units in the building, the time we moved in and the recession as a factor? Thanks.

Since you have not been in the building one whole year, it is a factor. Are there any guidelines in your building? For example, can you give one check that covers everyone and then tips are shared?
I moved into my building last year around Sept too and we just gave $100 to the super and $500 for the staff to share (we have a staff of 20).
This year I gave individual checks to everyone....our building suggests giving $1,000 per apt. since the staff is prohibited from taking tips during the year. I still give more to the super though!
Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the reply. Our building does not have a guideline. I am not trying to be cheap here. But using your numbers, giving an average of $50 per person would come to $15,000 in cash per person in a building with 300 units. This is all cash, tax free income. I don't know how many people get that type of bonus on average. Most of these people get tips during the year for doing what their job is. The other big question is considering we are in recession, should there be any change in the amount? I know people like myself who have lost more 50% of their networth in stock market and real estate.

I think you should just write one check for all the staff and another one for the super. I really don't believe that most people in my building give $50 per person.
Just give what you can....it will be appreciated and I understand your pain regarding losses in the stock market!!
Good luck in the New Year and Happy Holidays!!
