it's one of the safest neighborhoods in manhattan b/c of columbia univeristy -- tons of security patrolling, etc.

there are certain streets to be wary of. certain blocks that are a bit shady. (ie: 108 and 109 btw. amsterdam and columbus)

I used toi live on Broadway @107... it's really spotty up there. Generally speaking (there are always exceptions), I'd say the best spots are on Broadway (if you don't mind the commercialism) and Riverside. Go towards Amsterdam, and it gets worse. Basically, Amsterdam, Columbus, & Manhattan Ave are either the projects, or damn near the projects.

Hey I never said anything about race, just neighborhood. we are many shades of brown and can deal with darker, or lighter people. I was worried about crime. Don't be offended. i WOULD PREFER MY SON IN AN INTEGRATED NEIGHBORHOOD. No shame here.

Hey, I live on 113th and Broadway and its a great area. I attend columbia and security is all over the over the place. I bet your son is hating the Fire engine in this street which is working full time, and making 10+ trips to save people everyday, with a very loud noise.

Other than that, there are great new places being built around here as well.

We just moved to this area recently and love it. We're on 114th and Riverside. I've lived in a variety of areas in NYC, including funky east village and I can tell you, now that I have a family, no other neighborhood can compare. It is a little known jewel!

114th and Riverside...to up town for me. Bottom line anything above 98th street just isn't safe.

I used to think the same thing and really, it's not true, especially around Columbia U.

Harlem is nothing to worry about! It is a great neighborhood. And very safe. If you are ever concerned about a neighborhood, call the local prec. and ask for the community relations officer. You can compare crime stats for different parts of the city. The West Side in the low 100's has some of the lowest incidence of violent and petty crime in the city,

My suggestion would be go to the neighborhood around 10:00 - 11:00 in the evening. Walk around, that will give you a feeling if you feel comfortable.

Bottom line is you should always be careful walking around... you shouldn't be stumbling around drunk by yourself anywhere. Your son should be able to take care of himself. I'd be more worried about a daughter.

i could not agree more, i dont think this is an area for a young girl to be wandering alone at night. i also do not feel comfy with little ones there just yet. it may be the next big thing but right now one needs to be very alert when wandering around. that being said teh atmosphere is on its way up .

As a resonse to #14...walk around in Riverside Park up here and all you see are little ones. Also, some of the best pre-schools - Weekday at Riverside Church (120th), St. Hilda's & St. Hughes, Columbia School (head of school is Ex-Daltonite), etc. There are some blocks that are still a little sketch, around Amsterdam and 109/108...but that said, it is family, family, family. And the reason isn't just schools, it the great spaces in the terrific pre-war buildings.

Btw Broadway and Amsterdam north from 96th to about 109 is still rough. Everyplace else in Morninside is very nice.

I really don't get #22. The only reason you would suggest staying below 97th street is beacuse you bought there and want people to overpay for your area and hopefully increase the value of your place. You just don't seem credible to me.

Please allow me to explain. #22 is a very frequent poster on all such questions, especially regarding Morningside Heights and Harlem. He is what is known as a troll, and gets off on the thought that he's pissing someone off. He knows very well that statistically speaking, those two neighborhoods are safer than virtually all "good" Manhattan neighborhoods. Original poster, you should know that while Miami still seems to have a lot of violent crime and a siege mentality might be appropriate, that is absolutely no longer the case in New York. nytimes.com/realestate has statistics by neighborhood. Look under "communities".

#22 I guess it was those black Dutch folk who first settled Haarlem. #22 is a racist loser.

Is #22 a real estate broker that only operates south of 96th? LOL

Living in Hamilton Heights and ADORE it. Safe, friendly, great architecture.
Just have a walk on the weekend. And at night too, for as far as I'm concerned, I don't feel threatened by loud teenagers!
;-)
