Discussion about
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-segregation-26-dec26,0,976255.story Maybe this is why the troll rufus likes Chicago so much. He can't stand how NYC is so diverse and most people get along well.

What exactly is so bad about this? These people are voluntarily living in separate neighborhoods. There is no legal barrier for a black person who wants to live in the gold coast.

One major benefit of Chicago's segregation is that the violent crime are limited to certain neighborhoods. Chicago people in nice neighborhoods don't want to be near housing projects, whereas in Manhattan people are used to living in a "luxury" apartment that is across the street from a massive project.

Chicago is more clean, gentrified, and upscale than NYC. Just deal with it.

Rufus, as dumb as ever...

All evidence to the contrary...

Shooting at Cabrini Green housing project leaves 1 man dead

I thought that there weren't any more housing projects in the "nice" parts of Chicago. This is from 2 weeks ago.

There goes that theory.

Just face it, rufus, Chicagoans are as close minded about everything as you are. Very Midwestern mentality. Just isn't applicable in the Northeast.

oldbuyers, they tore down the vast majority of cabrini green, with just a few buildings left.

Once again, you failed to answer my question. What exactly is so bad about this? The people interviewed said they feel more comfortable living in segregated neighborhoods. It's their choice. Stop trying to impose your politically correct multicultural hogwash on other people.

well, apparently they still have violent crime in Cabrini Green. People are being murdered right across the street from wealthy people in Chicago. According to you, there aren't any projects in nice areas. That's a lie. There are still housing projects in nice areas. And by nice, according to Chicago standards, it's white.

Chicago is only good at being liberal when it comes to collecting taxes. They tax liberally but that's where it ends. Have you seen what's going on in your prized city? Your hero Mayor Dailey is losing control. He sold Midway Airport, sold the right to parking enforcement and the parking meters, sold all city owned parking garages. Your city is going bankrupt. People are moving away. Soon, the South and west side will be reflective of the city at large.

Mayor Dailey cannot even keep the roads clear of ice and snow.

Manhattan has massive housing projects along the east river, chelsea, upper west, and upper east.

Chicago's sales tax is pretty high, but at least they don't have a city tax, which is downright insane. And NYC's infrastructure is no better than Chicago's. Look at what happened last year when the subways were shut down because of rain.

And yet, there is still more crime there than anywhere in New York City. And Chicago is still MUCH more dangerous, MUCH poorer, and MUCH less upscale and cultured.

Chicago has substantially higher property taxes.

And, of course we pay more in taxes... we are RICHER.

The poor people of chicago (thats all of them) don't have to pay any federal tax.

> And NYC's infrastructure is no better than Chicago's.

Yes, I believe we can fit your entire train system into grand central.

Chicago's system is a joke. The bronx has 10x better subways than all of chicago.

> Look at what happened last year when the subways were shut down because of rain.

Chicago's system didn't shut down because they just got another horse.

Rufus, lincoln park had projects. And keep harping on the gold coast, but there are a ton of cheap crap apartments there. And it's a tourist trap.

Where does rufus get this fallacy that Chicago is "clean." I've been to Chicago, and it doesn't strike me as "clean." It really isn't any different than NYC in that regard, and there are lots more homeless in Chicago. If you said San Francisco was cleaner, I could see where you are coming from, but not Chicago.

yes, apparently Chicago has upscale "alleys". Because alleys are where the richest people live.

> And the buildings are newer and more uspcale.

= trump buildings.

Apparently bankrupt developers are the most upscale thing in Chicago.

I'm not even going to quote the rest of his blather. All I can say is wow. I have a feeling Rufus would have really dug the south 80 years ago.

I read a while ago that New Jersey is the most segregated state in the country.

I would have to say that Mumbai is likely the least segregated city in the world. You have billionaires living next door to people making only $1 per day.

Chicago is as segregated as it wants to be AND it is way cleaner than NY, AND much better organized and less messy AND much greener; AND culture is only relevant to who is cultured and who is not- averages do not apply. Only a dumb schmuck would quantify it for a whole city.
I am European and I have lived in both- should i just say Americans are dumb and American culture is an oxymoron?

And Trump is joke anywhere, nyc10022, but since most of his buildings ARE here in your zip code, I'd say the joke is on you.

"but since most of his buildings ARE here in your zip code"

That wasn't a very bright comment. You do know that Manhattan has more than one zip code right?

evangeline_a, i agree with everything you said about Chicago. But NYC people know nothing about Chicago, so don't expect them to know what you're talking about.

Yes, I guess Chicago is like Europe in that respect. Unemployment and lack of industry is "culture". The French have made welfare a way of life... and Chicago is happy to oblige.
