Discussion about
Jared Kushner, the owner of the NY Observer and heir to a big real estate fortune, still lives in a rental apartment at 300 Mercer, a horribly ugly building in the village. It's hilarious that even the wealthy in NYC live in such terrible apartments.

Yeah, leave the guy alone, maybe he likes his place and gives away money to help people. Why does everybody have to conform to someone else's idea of where they should live when they have a certain amount of money?

Daniel Day-Lewis went off and studied shoemaking in Florence, Italy. I am sure that does not fit what most people think an actor would do but let people live the way the way they want to live, if they're not hurting anybody.

Rich ppl live below their means. We could all learn from that!! Everyone else is leased and mortgaged up the wazoo.

Jared has been looking for the perfect family apartment for a year. He is going to buy but there's no rush. He's only 27!

Yeah, I heard Jared is still looking for a condo. He was supposedly interested in the one madison building.

Having said that, 300 mercer is not a great building, so I have no idea why he lives there.

I remember an article in the NYtimes RE section from about 1-2 years ago, maybe more, how there were rich folk paying astronomical sums - 50k, 100k per month or more - for rentals. They could obviously afford to buy, but they felt the cash would be better used elsewhere...

For actors, though, I have a feeling that some of 'em are renting and deducting as an expense...

fyi - SJP does not rent - she lives in a beautiful west village townhouse
yes - he is dating ivanka trump who is in the midst of converting to judaism for their impending nuptuals
I agree - so what if he rents? probably has a great deal (as do I) and does not want to throw away money

And Ivanka lived in the Left Bank in Philly (http://www.leftbankapts.com/) for a while as well. If the place is temporary, why buy?

Another reason some actors rent is that it is very difficult to buy into a co-op privately ... some boards will allow you to buy through a trust with an occupancy rider, but most won't. So a celeb is stuck either buying in his/her own name, with the address out there for the world to see, or buying a condo.
