if you're willing to be near very near the 96th St express subway station and riverside park, you can get a deal at this building:

http://www.streeteasy.com/nyc/rental/434439-condo-230-riverside-drive-upper-west-side-new-york

850 sqft for 2800 asking, newly renovated

your welcome.

In that case, this building is the ultimate in prime locations for the UWS--W 67th St park block near lincoln center. The building is over 20 years old, so the apartment may not be "prime" condition, and it is listed as 756 sq ft, but bear in mind those are honest 1980s measurements--its a large one bedroom:

http://www.streeteasy.com/nyc/rental/442666-condo-45-west-67th-street-lincoln-square-new-york

(it's not hard to use Streeteasy's search functions)

WEA? funny, I never thought of Lincoln Towers as prime, compared to newly renovated park block prewar 2 blocks from an express train.

okay, then the WEA place is not on Streeteasy, my apologies. There are newer spaces available on Riverside Blvd, but I don't think of that area as prime because it's such a hike to retail and subway. If you don't take mass transit, you might consider those.
