Discussion about
That Christine Quinn, as usual, desperately trying to keep her snout in the political trough:
http://www.observer.com/2009/real-estate/quinn-turn-unsold-condos-middle-class-housing
Council Speaker Christine Quinn unveiled a plan today for the city to buy unsold luxury condominiums and turn them into subsidized housing for middle-income families. Speaking in her state of the city address this afternoon, Ms. Quinn said the initiative would “add thousands of new affordable homes."

oh my goodness, this is the scarriest thing I have ever heard from a politician! If you paid $2.5 million for a luxury condo, are yu going to have to live next to some welfare person with 5 kids? And where is the city going to come up with the money to buy these condos? Does the stimulus plan provide the money?

its called the liberalization of NY. This place has had too many Republicans running it for too long. Its payback time. Also, it is so unfair that one family should be able to spend $2.5mm for housing anyway.

Republicans? LIke who? Bloomberg? Paterson? Silver? Schumer? Where are the Republicans you speak of?
And it is not unfair for someone to be able to afford $2.5 million for a condo. As long as they made the moeny legally, they have the right to pay as much as they want to.

Its all part of the master plan. How is it possible that some could have so much more than others, we are all God's children. You want to penalize one because of their chance of birth, limited educational opportunities, or for just not being very motivated. Keep renting, if you own, sell, at any price!....The anger and sense of payback is palpable, did you happen to catch any of the hearings in Washington the last few days. The inmates are running amok!

Of course this proposal is going to go nowhere -- Quinn's just trying to score points with the voting public. She doesn't have pores, so she has to roll around in mud to cool off.

We need more conservative/libertarian candidates for city & state gov. If you know any such person who is interested in politics, please encourage them to run for office. We need to stem the tide of socialism & defend 5th Amendment Private Property rights.

alpine292, I know you've shown a propensity for being less than stellar on reading comprehension and grammar, so I guess I'll let your comment on welfare slide.
Quinn said the MIDDLE CLASS, not the POOR. Middle class are not on welfare. They are the ones that work for a living, usually have good jobs that don't pay excessively, such as teachers, cops, firefighters, managers at grocery stores, middle line managers, etc. Imagine having to be a neighbor with one of those?
This is a great idea. There are plenty of housing options for the poor and welfare dependent people in NYC, plenty of housing options for the working poor, but very limited housing options for the middle class. Chances are, most of you are middle class.

To appeal to the MIDDLE CLASS, a mortgage payment would drop from $10,000 a month to maybe $6,000 a month.
I applaud Quinn's insight and forward thinking. Finally, a politican that includes the middle class in a government program. Most government subsidies are catered for the polar opposites, extreme wealth or extreme poor.

"The market is headed towards these becoming affordable for the middle class as it is. Let's not get the City involved."
Except the developers would have to declare bankruptcy first. Which would not benefit the owners of the other units, either. And I don't believe there is a vast social gulf between those who can afford $10K a month and those who can afford $6K (I can afford neither). Whatever you may think of Quinn, I do believe there is a role for the city government in helping to craft the best possible outcome for the community.
If the buildings were to convert to accommodate additional "middle class" housing, there could be other benefits for current owners. The developers could argue for an extension of tax abatements, for example.

In my personal interactions with professional white lesbians, they often talk a lot about these egaliatian issues but they themselves typically live pretty segregated lives--by class, race/ethnicity, etc.
I'd love to see Quinn practice what she preaches. Rosie O'Donnell kept on saying she didn't see color at all and all races were the same to her--until she began "paying premium" to adopt White babies. Let's see how Quinn herself might feel about letting the "less wealthy" into her own bldg.!

Maybe this could lead to the Guidoization of Williamsburg and LIC.
I'd like to see WB with a Guido population to balance out the Hipsters. Picture it, teamsters, firefighters, meatheads all taking over the pool at The EDGE, turning the restaurant at Northside Piers into a strip club and knocking over skinny hipsters on bikes. Awesome.

I've seen this movie before. In the 60's lots of people moved to NYC for the jobs (in all those fancy new skyscrapers) and the exciting counter-culture vibe, nightlife. Perfect for young professionals. In the 70's NYC almost went bankrupt, living in the city started to really suck (re: Al Pacino "Panic in Needle Park" , Riverside Park that is, and "Death Wish"). Suddenly all those 60's transplants moved to the suburbs (re: Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue"). Lots of 3 and 4 BR apts were chopped up into studios and 1 BRs. When those couldn't sell/rent, the city turned them into SROs. That takes us to the 80's and 90's when the city started to re-gentrify and the SROs were converted back into "luxury units" tenants were sent off to Queens and Brooklyn. Looks like the cycle maybe starting all over again.
