Discussion about
I'm in the process of purchasing a co-op. I need to do a complete renovation. I just read Joyce Cohen's article in the NY Times that the co-op owner needed approval from the City and it took two years. Help, does anyone know about this type of approval.

You need permits to do work & the city also sends out an inspector to be sure that it is done properly, a very good thing actually. I don't know why that should take 2 years, however.

city approval may not have taken that long, but depending on the building...many coops have strict rules about renovations. can only renovate during the summer, only one renovation taking place at a time, etc. find out from realtor what rules are. gl

My friend made a huge mistake when remodeling his kitchen: He bought all of his appliances before getting his permit from the city. Let's just say its a good thing that he got the extended warranty. It took 9 months to get the permits from the City. During this time, he was living in a one bedroom apartment with no functional kitchen and large appliances in his living room and bedroom.
