Prospect Lefferts Gardens
On the eastern border of Prospect Park, Prospect Lefferts Garden is a residential neighborhood that combines beauty and diversity. Originally a bourgeois neighborhood, Prospect Lefferts Garden’s past can be seen in its diverse housing. Single-family Tudors neighbor limestone townhouses and shingled Victorians. As the wealthy residents moved to other areas, the personality of Prospect Lefferts Garden changed. Large apartment buildings were built and bodegas dominated the commercial strips. The neighborhood’s population grew more diverse as a prominent Caribbean community moved in. Today, Prospect Lefferts Garden is returning to its roots with an influx of young families. Those looking for an alternative to Park Slope and Prospect Heights now covet the Prospect Lefferts Garden’s historic homes, tree-lined streets and reasonable prices. This area still has room for improvement, specifically its public schools and the question of gentrification, but it is undeniably a neighborhood to watch.
