NEW YORK — Billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical companies and their chief executives on Friday, declaring that they "don't make a lot of money" and shouldn't be scapegoats in the health care debate.
The mayor – and wealthiest person in New York City with a fortune estimated at $16.5 billion – made the comments on his radio show Friday during a discussion about health care.
"You know, last time I checked, pharmaceutical companies don't make a lot of money, their executives don't make a lot of money – not that they couldn't be better," Bloomberg said.
Abbott Laboratories Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Miles White's compensation was $25.3 million in 2008. The North Chicago, Ill.-based company saw profit rising 35 percent to $4.88 billion.
Merck & Co.'s chief executive, Richard T. Clark, received a $17.3 million compensation package for 2008. The company's profit more than doubled to $7.8 billion.

Oh drug reps that's another bullshit job right up there with 6%enters. If a drug works for my ailments, wouldn't it sell itself? But the drug reps are quite cute and well groomed and seems to be abl to hold a converstion...... Hmmmmm where do thy end up when they aren't prettty anymore and is 'let' go? Ala airline industy. I for one would like to have 'pretty' boys or gals working for the airlines (like japan, korea, middle east airlines where sexism still runs rampant). : )

I won't speak to the drug reps, but the anti-pharma hellraising that goes on in this country is so over-the-top, it's laughable. There are far bigger problems in healthcare:
"Some common diagnoses are wide of the mark. One is price gouging by drug companies. In fact, pills account for barely a tenth of health-care spending in America and similarly small shares elsewhere. But aren’t costs lower in Europe because of price controls? Europe does indeed spend less on new branded drugs, but also uses fewer generic drugs and pays much more for them. And Switzerland actually has higher drug prices than America (as does Canada). Greedy drugmakers are not the main cause of America’s runaway costs."
shocking- huffington post against the republican candidate!!! lol.. laughing all th eway to the polls in november....

Whats funny is, he actually corrected himself, yet the howling continues.
from crains:
"He appeared to quickly realize he made a gaffe. When the show returned from commercial, he told Mr. Gambling that he had “looked up” some of the salaries and that some of the pharmaceutical CEOs “are making a lot of money.”"

Agreed.
But this is what happens when you have ignorant folk who work off soundbites, and who call anyone that doesn't agree with them a Republican.
This is why we have these messes... and why I don't look to government as the solution to it all.

I'm not for price controls on pharmaceuticals. I wish the companies big profits as that's the basis of big research and development efforts. There have been many great developments. (But there has also been far too many me-too drugs, patent expiration manipulations, and excessive marketing expenses.)
What I do really dislike is the fact that most of the rest of the world does have price controls while Americans pay the full cost of all the research and development. Totally unfair!

In my view, those are the 3 major issues. Nice summary!

I don't follow the train of thought at all - what does government have to do with that?

Really? Bloomberg is toast over such a silly thing? Big f-ing deal. I think NYers know the guy is rich. People have forever tried to paint him as out of touch. He's still quite ahead in the polls.
