Discussion about
I recently selected tile for the backsplash in my kitchen. I was quoted a price of $136 per square foot (price does not include installation). This seems very expensive. Anybody have ideas on places to find tiles priced more reasonably?
Sounds like a top top of the line glass tile with some sort of high tech or fancy design inlay. Pick a different tile. If the price is that high, it isn't where you are buying it, but what you are buying. You may be able to save a few % by finding a different supplier, but you can save much more by picking a different tile.
I agree with jhochle -- don't make any design element a "must have" without regard to cost.
But try Nemo in Chelsea, and Quality Tile in the Bronx.
For the tile alone?? Hand painted? Keep looking. I just bought an enormous amount of tile for 4 bathrooms from buytile.com
overstock.com has great tile, laugh it up if you like, but I found the exact backsplash i wanted there, when the fancy tile stores in the city told me there was no such pattern.
I used caesarstone quartz for both countertop and backsplash @ $69/sf installed. The all-in cost is surprisingly affordable, but looks expensive enough for my taste. If you are looking at $136 psf tile, you clearly have very good taste.
There are quite a few tile places in Long Island City for decent prices... I bought the tiles there and used my super's recommendation, which was cheap.
go to home depot and look at their custom orders. plenty of great tile and you'll get 10 sq ft for the price they want to charge you for 1. you can also look at http://www.cooltiles.com/. they send you samples.
I like Bella Tile in the East Village for the service, but I agree with Alanhart that if you're watching your budget, get something basic through Nemo.

The places in LIC are significantly cheaper than Home Depot... but HD could be a decent one stop shop if you don't want to haul yourself to LIC and then find a contractor on your own.
Basically HD is going to tack on a finder fee on top of the contractor's rates and then charge a bit more margin on the tiles, but it's easier to go yell at them at the end of the day if you're not happy.
Thanks to all for the ideas
I'll be the outlier here. If it's for a small area, and it's a truly unique pattern which you love, maybe 100+/sqft is okay.
PMG, may I ask where you went to get your caesarstone countertops? That price is incredible.
You can go look in Flushing or Brooklyn with all the chinese stores who normally have very good prices for countertops and kitchen tiles. In Flushing they are all along College Point. Also if you are willing to do cash, they normally will deal on sales tax.
Yep, if you have time & energy & a vehicle, drive around College Point.
There's also Classic Tile in Bk - google for address.
Yes after buying still in bubble territory, let's nickle and dime the tile guy.
Hey, I didn't say it was an efficient use of time. But that's human nature. People underestimate the value of their time and nickel and dime ALL the time. Why else do coupons work?
W67: I do admire your persistence. If people wanna buy in this environment, let them.
all depends on what you want to pay. I did not want overly expensive tile for my kitchen and what i bought was a brand my contractor had used, but by me going and spending my own time i saved a few hundred. Same goes for the countertop.
Nyc10023, it's america. We just picked a candidate who doesn't believe in evolution. Who am I to judge? But f'ka me if I can't make fun of financial retardidness. It's like a buyer who is wooed by the 4% mortgage, or someone who is 'too' embarrassed to bid low against a lala land asking, or who is suckered with an abated re tax on new construction. Just plain insane.
W67: can you explain the tea party thing to me?
tea party... well it's the fringe group in the Repulican party that think:
1) illegals should be shot on sight, with their miniature AK-47 on full auto mode;
2)said Ak-47 should be in their right to carry at all times, concealed, or not;
3) taxes should be abolished except on people that make more than them or have a higher IQ than them or can speak in full sentences;
4) there's god, and all the people that should be killed in the name of their god;
5) monkeys are animals, but humans are different cause we kill for sport;
6) beer is good, wine is snooty;
7) why don't you fking speak english? when speaking to a french guy in france;
8) any freaky sex involving livestock is fine, but they get weirded out when it's two men... but two women, bring it on!;
I can go on... but. The fringe group was kept under wraps and played along with the mainstream republicans when the going was good, factory jobs aplenty, trailer RE was going up and their john deeres held its value.... but now that their 6th grade education only allows them to cashier at the Piggly Wiggly, Willie Nelson concert tkts are too expensive and corn prices have plummneted, they R pissed.
They are letting it all hang out... including their 70 inch beer belly, their disdain for their own party and anyone who looks different than them. Notice all tea party bangers are white, middle american looking and speak in 3 word sentences... they take comfort in their own stupidity. The fking hilarity of it all is only surpassed by their own splitting of the republican party... making themselves less effective all around.
But I do like the tea baggers push to eliminate fannie/freddie... oh, and ... never mind.. that's the only thing that comes to mind.
Thx. I suppose I believe in freedom of political speech.
