Discussion about
The national debt is the single biggest threat to national security, according to Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Tax payers will be paying around $600 billion in interest on the national debt by 2012, the chairman told students and local leaders in Detroit. http://www.executivegov.com/2010/08/mullen-national-debt-is-a-security-threat/
Perfect! Cut the defense budget by half, and we're safe.
And what did you think when the Pentagon said global warming was a huge national security threat?
What specific defense cuts would you make steve, besides the ones Riversider has already mentioned? (This should be hilarious . . .)
Would you pull our troops out of "Czechoslovakia"? (Have you read up yet about the fact that Czechoslovakia doesn't exist anymore?)
You can pull out all of the troops from europe, japan, close all the bases in germany and japan. Of course you will have to deal with an increase in unemployment payments to all the soldiers coming back to the US. I believe the net savings (closuser - unemplyment payments) is very large. Unfortunately to the country, the corporations which rule washington do not really care about the defecit or the country. Social expenditure is less than our defense spending for a reason.
From wikipedia.
The 2009 U.S. military budget is almost as much as the rest of the world's defense spending combined and is over nine times larger than the military budget of China (compared at the nominal US dollar / Renminbi rate, not the PPP rate). The United States and its close allies are responsible for two-thirds to three-quarters of the world's military spending (of which, in turn, the U.S. is responsible for the majority).
How about we cut back to what the Chinese are spending?
Close all the bases in Germany and pull out of Europe? Anyone who says that is completely clueless. Within five years there would be unbelievable turmoil in Europe if the U.S. military had no presence there. That comment is laughable.
The more you have to lose, the more you have to spend to protect it, the more layers of fences you have to build...
Can you be a bit more specific regarding European turmoil? I thought the German economy was doing better than the US. At least according to your pal, rent stabilizer. If they're not willing to pay for this protection, why should we?
China and Russia would love to have a base in Mexico or Canada, not that either country need the protection.
To all the naive who believe we don't need a strong military.

A specially upgraded Russian Akula class submarine has been caught trying to record the acoustic signature made by the Vanguard submarines that carry Trident nuclear missiles, according to senior Navy officers.
British submariners have also reported that they are experiencing the highest number of "contacts" with Russian submarines since 1987.
If the Russians are able to obtain a recording of the unique noise of the boat's propellers it would have serious implications for Britain's nuclear deterrent. Using its sophisticated sonar, the Akula would be able to track Vanguards and potentially sink them before they could launch their Trident D4 missiles.

Whatever happened to the US military spaceplane they sent up a while ago?
So that's why we need military bases in Europe? To guard against Russian subs recording british subs? Is that meant to be funny? Surely yup must have a you tube to illuminate this further?
Perhaps if interest rates were raised, we could forestall this problem?
There are no longer any easy adjustments or corrections for the US economy. Take welfare and the social welfare state, which is the primary reaon for our on-going and accelerating economic decay.
Millions of people and countless businesses currently depend exclusively or substantially, directly or indirectly, on govermment transfer payments. whatever programs we cut, in the short run eliminating them
will increase unemployment and business failure rates.
Such cuts will benefit the country and economy in the long run. But getting to the point where they will
the economy and its problems will get worse/
"While China's continued effort to be able to sustain military operations far from its shore are concerning to the U.S. military, "China's ability to sustain military power at a distance, today, remains limited," the report says."
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/08/16/us.china.military/index.html
If the U.S. pull out of the bases around the world, you can replace "China" with "U.S." and vice versa, from the quote above.
The US needs more workers and fewer shirkers. People who work produce wealth. People who reproduce at the expense of those who work end up impoverishing everybody.
"Whatever happened to the US military spaceplane they sent up a while ago?"
It is so secret that the US Military cannot find it!!!!
It can stay in orbit for up to 270 days.
Da wabbits are coming, hurray, hurray!
Da wabbits are coming, hurray, hurray!
How come is it that LICC and Riversider think the government is incompetent for things like social security and health care and education, but trust the government for the military, the police, and national security?
Laughable.
Because the military is more a-political.
And compare NASA to the Airforce in terms of ad ministerial effectiveness. Im not a fan of the military. Would prefer more programs be run by civilians, but we'd be further along in space technology if the military ran it.
Oh...there are no politics involved in military procurement. None at all.
"Because the military is more a-political."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Anyone who believes in bases probably uses a typewriter and believe that it is a new invention. The appointment of generals is as political as any selection of a CEO for any company except that the generals are not allowed to be creative or inventive. Germany has better social net than the USA and spends less on military. The germans reliy on Riverside and his freinds to pay for the bases and quickly self destruct the USA. All the "miltary big spenders" on this board have no clue of what a Tank or a Plane looks like inside ( except a 747) and also do not understand what computers and other new technologies do. Bases are passe" paid for by the declining naked emperor..
"Close all the bases in Germany and pull out of Europe? Anyone who says that is completely clueless. Within five years there would be unbelievable turmoil in Europe if the U.S. military had no presence there."
Why, what's going to happen? Is Germany going to invade Poland again? Give me a break. You sound like a shill for the military industrial complex.
"Would prefer more programs be run by civilians, but we'd be further along in space technology if the military ran it."
Didn't the Air Force have a mini space program in the past?
"A specially upgraded Russian Akula class submarine has been caught trying to record the acoustic signature made by the Vanguard submarines that carry Trident nuclear missiles, according to senior Navy officers."
OH NO, Russian subs! I'm so afraid! Please don't let them hurt me.
And just an FYI: Russian subs (ie: Kursk) have killed more Russians than they have Europeans.
Pres is another guy who thinks he is an expert on geo-military matters. Sure, pull the U.S. military back from everywhere and Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, etc. will all just sit there and behave themselves because, well, just because Pres thinks they will.
Pathetic.
What will they do that is so frightening to you
Oh I know. If we pull our troops out, Russia will install a nuclear reactor in Iran. Luckily, our troops are all still in place so that can't happen.
has anyone seen the movie "the second civil war"? it's fantastic and very relevant, despite being around 15 years old. absolutely hilarious. you guys would enjoy it.
"Pres is another guy who thinks he is an expert on geo-military matters. Sure, pull the U.S. military back from everywhere and Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, etc. will all just sit there and behave themselves because, well, just because Pres thinks they will."
Do you know what LICC? You are right. We should not withdraw out tropps. If we do, Iran and North Korea will do some really crazy stuff like start up a nuclear program. North Korea might even sink a South Korean ship. Oh wait a second....
Sseriously LICC, your just a shill who only knows how to recite GOP talking points.
Pres, if you weren't so careless with your statements, you would know from my comments and opinions on this board that I differ substantially from GOP talking points. But when it comes to fiscal conservatism and national defense, the GOP is far better than the liberal Democrats.
Quick, go watch MSNBC so you can take your commands on what opinions to have . . .
GOP is far better than anyone on earth. they block veterans' benefits, they run military hospitals to the ground, they spend so much money in Iraq that we do not know who got paid for what, they block defense reduction even when the secretary of defense and the army support the cut. We are really lucky to have the GOP defend us. Not to mention Bush attention to the intelligent reports prior to 9/11 while spending time on the Ranch. Anyone who makes such statements like the "GOP is better" is in reality an unpatriotic person who hates our soldiers! LIC- Go watch Fox the center of fairness and truth which is owned by the Saudis and do not forget to hold hands with the King on his next visit. maybe you can convince him to close some of his religious schools.LIC is as unpatriotic as they come!
That's right, Fox News is owned by a SAUDI prince. And some guy on Fox and Friends says that the prince builds radical Madrassas throughout the world, which means that, Fox News is a raidical Madrassa!!!! Oh my goondess, I can't beleive nobody saw this!
Let me rephrase what 07 just said- Blame Bush!!
"you would know from my comments and opinions on this board that I differ substantially from GOP talking points."
Examples please.
