Discussion about
Wednesday Martin's new book "Primates of Park Avenue" is supposed to be an insidery/anthropological study of the women of UES. I was curious to see where a person who had been "accepted by the tribe"would have lived. I assumed that she would have lived in an amazing UES apt. As it turns out, she lived in a 1,500 sq. ft. condo. (http://streeteasy.com/sale/61020-condo-900-park-avenue-upper-east-side-new-york) She just seems like a total sham. The book seems to be selling well, but she's grossly misinformed about many things especially the real estate process.

At least you didn't discover she's from Williamsburg.

A total sham," huh? I guess with that broad dismissal we can comfortably just sweep aside every word she has written as being utterly without any merit or truth. Thank you because for a moment I thought her book may actually cause some people to reflect a little about their choices and lives and maybe even to be uncomfortable. And lord knows, especially based on how most guys on the UES dress, we all just want to always be comfortable.

Does she ever claim to have been " one of them"? I thought the opposite was true. And while the almost $3.2 million (significantly more today) 1600sf 3/3.5 in a 70's building at 79th and Park is a far cry from the 3000 sf duplexes in prime Park buildings, it's a lot closer to that reality than 99.9% of us could achieve. There are many factors that come into play when being accepted in a certain social environment, not just the status of your apartment building or how old your money is.

I haven't read the book, just the excerpts, but there's some truth to this. My children attended prep schools in the city and I've seen some mothers at one school just as described in the book. They were overly-involved in their children's homework and activities, very competitive mothers, very overdressed/made up for school events. Most of the mothers were not like this. Even among the wealthiest and most prominent in the city, they behaved and dressed like average people.

It looks like I wasn't the only person to find the inconsistencies in her story troubling. Her publisher is "going to put an asterisk on future editions" and the NY Post noted many inconsistencies in her chronology.

If she really wanted to make a social critique that people could take seriously, then she shouldn't have made up so much of her material. While the term "wife bonus" probably sold a lot of books, I wonder if she really knew anyone that had an arrangement like that.

Also, do you really believe that the condo board conducted her interview in her bedroom? Isn't that a bit weird, even for someone on bed-rest?

There's going to be a new show "Odd Mom Out" concerning competition among Manhattan's wealthy.

Her book is to reality like the TV show Veep is to what actually goes on in the White House. There are some small grains of truth, which have been embellished, satirized and blown out of proportion. Most people on the UES are not at all as described in the book (I live there).

Something tells me this author doesn't belong on the Upper East Side. Probably more the Long Island City / Williamsburg type in actuality.

Doesn't belong on the UES? Quite the compliment.
