As one of Queens’ westernmost neighborhoods, Astoria offers a quick and easy commute into Manhattan. But there’s much more to enjoy — like the wide selection of cuisines, the commercial avenues, and the neighborhood-y feel. Although prices have risen in Astoria throughout the years, there are still plenty of deals to be found, such as 21-57 33rd St. #5E. Our Deal of the Week is a 1-bedroom unit in the northern Ditmars-Steinway section of Astoria.

The Price: $269,000

The median asking price of a home in Astoria was $885,000 this past December, according to the StreetEasy Data Dashboard. That puts our Deal of the Week at less than a third of the median asking price for the neighborhood!

Buyers who make the 20% minimum down payment of $53,800 can expect to see monthly payments of $2,400. This includes a mortgage payment of $1,427 and a maintenance fee of $973. It’s also far below the median asking rent in Astoria, which sat at $2,800 this December.

Why You’ll Love It…

You enter this unit through a foyer and are welcomed by the exposed brick wall and hardwood floors in the living area, which is big enough for both living furniture and a dining nook. Two windows overlook the building’s private courtyard, creating a serene feel. The kitchen is semi-open to the living area and features plenty of cabinetry, as well as stainless steel appliances, including a dishwasher! Additionally, the kitchen is windowed and provides city views.

You’ll find more exposed brick in the spacious bedroom, though this wall is whitewashed. One door down is the bathroom, which has a unique style with white-tiled walls and a teal vanity. Like the kitchen, the bathroom has a window.

The unit is located in The Acropolis, a pre-war co-op building located just off Ditmars Avenue. The building has its own laundry facility, courtyard, and pet-friendly policy, and permits subletting after two years. Location-wise, this building is hard to beat: it’s just a couple of blocks from the N and W trains, providing a quick commute into Manhattan.

Plus, there’s a plethora of restaurants and shops nearby. Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Burgerology Astoria, Hamido Seafood, HinoMaru Ramen, The Thirsty Koala, and Taverna Kyclades are just a sampling of the eateries on surrounding blocks. The building is close to Astoria Park, too, providing some much-needed green space.

…And Why You Might Not

Unfortunately, this unit is in a walk-up building and appears to be on the fifth floor, so there are a lot of stairs to climb. The floor plan also does not show a closet in the bedroom, although there is one in the hall right outside the bedroom.
