Another record may be set in the high-flying world of New York City real estate.
According to the Wall Street Journal, a 20,000-square-foot townhouse at 12 E. 69th St. is now under contract for $80 million. And while that’s considerably less than the $114 million original list price, and even below the most recent list price of $98 million, it would still be enough to make this the most expensive townhouse sale in NYC history.
The WSJ reports: “The current record was set in 2006, when financier J. Christopher Flowers paid $53 million for the Harkness mansion on East 75th Street.”
The East 69th Street townhouse is owned by billionaire Vincent Viola, President Donald Trump’s onetime pick for Secretary of the Army and the owner of the Florida Panthers hockey team. Viola, a Wall Street trader, withdrew from the cabinet nomination, citing business conflicts. In August 2016, he was accused of punching a concession worker at a horse auction in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Viola and his wife Teresa bought the 40-foot-wide mansion in 2005 for $20 million, and have since completed an interior makeover that includes a panic room, velvet-laden home theater, and an ocean of granite and marble.
The property dates to 1884, and contains 19 total rooms, including 7 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 3 powder rooms, a swimming pool, sauna and library.
The listing was held by Paula Del Nunzio of Brown Harris Stevens. The property had not been publicly listed since 2014.
