6 month advance deposit for rental??

how common is this? we go to see a rental unit, and in the process of negotiations, the landlord asks for 6 months advance rent (to cover the BACK 12 months of rent). FWIW, i do not think i'm a "high risk" tenant. the rental was $4300/month. my takehome is 9K/month. i showed them $250k in liquid assets, 0 debt, and my median credit score is above 800. is this shady?
