Discussion about
List: Performer(s), venue, date. What is currently at that location.
Bruce, Bottom Line, 1970s. Currently another N.Y.U. building.
Kinky, Lone Star Cafe, 1970s. A bank.
Billy Preston with Levon Helm & the Band, L.S. Roadhouse, 1991
Elvis Costello. Late'80s. Palladium. NYU.
Ritz, continental (now Irving Plaza)
I saw BP at the Lone Star. Saw the Band there with tons of guest performers
Talking Heads;Flipper Mudd Club 1980;1982 Condos (77 White Street)
David Cassidy, Garden State Arts Center, 1971 or 1972. Now The PNC Bank Arts Center.
NY Dolls, Mercer Arts Center 1973(?) I don't know what's there now but I'll say either NYU or condos
jeff buckley, the old sin-é on st. marks, mid 90s, have no idea what's there now.
Devo and many others, Max's Kansas City, 1977, now a deli I wouldn't particularly wouldn't want to buy anything unpackaged in
ramones at cbgb's. high end designer john varvatos cloething store
Wow. I want to go to one of the SE shin digs to talk music! Hell with real estate...lol.
Secret Machines (back when they were good), the most recent Sin- on Attorney. Not sure what's there now, but closed only a couple years ago I think.
Dead milkmen and Marshall crenshaw mid-80s peppermint lounge (if my memory is correct). don't know what's there now
The Wedding Present and The Connells at Tramps in the late 90's...now a club or restaurant.
Burning Spear, Carter USM, Slow Dive, Swervedriver, Charktans UK and many, many others in the 80's to the not so long ago at Irving Plaza.
The Poster Children at The Knitting Factory in the early 90's...now a mixed-use space.
A ton of great stuff at Brownies...now Hi-Fi (I think).
Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Van Morrison, Fillmore East, 1969-1970, Emigrant Bank & Condos.
I guess this certifies me as the oldest guy on SE.
late 90's - Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees at LIFE on Bleecker 7 Sullivan... was empty until a year ago and shockingly, is once again a nightlife venue, le poission rouge. I used to do guestlist there during college...
Phish at wetlands... god what is it now?
Far too many drag queens to remember at Limelight, now slated to become.. a f*cking mall for godsake. Is nothing sacred anymore?
Hi to Steve L, glamma!
I saw SS & Bs at Danceteria, I believe.
Is Limelight really becoming a mall? Sacre Bleu ... that's sacrilege!
Forgot...Bob Mould (acoustic to boot) at FEZ...now...uh...not FEZ.
I also saw Siouxsie (in NJ in '92-ish)...very good show.
do they still have concerts at the piers at 12th and 50ish? i did a quick search and couldn't find any recent references to any.
one summer in the mid-80s i saw both the kinks and csn(i think not y) there. i have zero recollection of why i was at a csn concert, but the concert goers made for an interesting study.
maybe the current economic conditions will derail the plans for the limelight. i walked by the other day and it doesn't seem to be a hotbed of activity.
NYCDreamer--I, too, remember the Fillmore East--saw Neil Young and the Airplane--also frequented the Ritz and Limelight (much of it a blur) in those days as I was living in the Vermeer--(77 7th)and-- they were within walking/staggering distance--
I used to live next door to the Ritz ... at least as far as their office was concerned when I called to get on the list.
NYCDreamer - 69 sounds like Astral Weeks days for Van M. (an all time fav of mine) Interesting to compare that performance to his run through of Astral Weeks at the Beacon recently, which was mostly unintelligible from what I gather. How was the thing you went to after the meetup? On my way home I was kicking myself that I didn't tag along.
Grace jones. Tunnel new years eve 1987.
Typing on bb, not sure what tunnel is now? So many great shows! NYC was far more interesting, I'll take the grit and grime any day! Some great Iggy shows at the pep and a memorable X show!
not all of this is historical - Sonic Youth, Summer 08.
Venue now in the process of becoming..... a pool again.
why they can't have both is beyond me. that would be the kewlest...
Spin... It was a great performance by singer songwriter Asaf Avidam accompanied by a very interesting cello. BTW best Van Morrison concert I ever saw about 2001 Boston Fleet Center with Dylan.
I saw Grace Jones on a New Years eve a few years before that, somewhere way west -- I think the bldg was on the Hudson. But you had to take an elevator up to the smallish venue. I wish I knew what club it was ... it was the only time I was ever there.
Combustible Edison, late 90s, Windows on the World. Sigh.
Alan..Grace Jones performed at studio 54 on New Years Eve 1977-78. i was a publicist for her record label at the time and drew the assignment because her publicist and my best friend in the world had a REAL DATE...my "man" at the time was in Montana so I was free to dedicate myself to the greater good of drugs and rock and roll if not the first element of the trinity. I got word about an hour ago that the "man in Montana", my first serious love and later dear friend, passed away Wednesday. I think I should stay way from all nostalgia threads at this time.....
liz, so sorry to hear that. my condolences.
I'm very sorry to hear that, Liz.
GJ NYE for me wasn't Studio, and wasn't 1978. She seems to have a special thing for NYE performances, though.
interesting thread.
First time in peppermint lounge, 15yo.... 1984ish? Did more nite club thing. Studio 54 while it was dying out.
Oh, yeah Urban Blight at Irving Plaza, Paul Young on a venue near meat packing district... almost got kicked out of that one...
Fun times.... but I was so burned out by the time I hit college... I sorta never went. I think that's the thing about growing up in NYC... the kids are introduced so young that by college we are very "so over it" phase.... I don't know if good or bad.....
The Vulture over at that magazine website is flapping its ugly wings, right now. We've got another great thread running here.
Alan: That was the Dr. Pepper music on the pier concert series. Ray Davies was camping it up, with the crew of The Intrepid: "Hey,sailor..." The stage was first set up at the east end of the pier. Then somebody realized that great sunset views could be enjoyed, by setting the stage up at the west end of the pier. Those shows were fun. Saw CSN, too.
The Schaefer Music series, at the Bandshell in Central Park, was the origin for the Dr. Pepper series.
Saw a great Commander Cody show there.
yeah, just before I started nightclubbing I saw the B-52s at Dr. Pepper at Wollman Rink ... I think they had been tossed out of (or outgrew) the Bandshell. I believe Tropicana was a sponsor for a few years.
Yes, Alan. In the days before naming rights were sold to generate revenue. Today, it would be "The Dr. Pepper Rink/bandshell" at Central Park. They can't just sponsor a music concert series, they have to get the venue re-named after them.
My friends in the mid-west love the Dr. Pepper. I haven't had soda, since 1986. One day I drank a Coke, out of a glass. It tasted like soap. The glass was clean, couldn't figure out why it tasted like soap. Soda is bad for you, anyway.
Procol Harum 1967 Wollman Rink "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
1965, The Beatles, Shea Stadium, Soon To Be Parking Lot for Citifield
NO I really wasn't there but it sounded good. (I was at Mets and Jets games there though that year).
"ramones at cbgb's. high end designer john varvatos cloething store"

"The band continued the party at E__P, the music venue downstairs, until 5 a.m."
It's actually below the Morrison Hotel store next door, and not open to the public, but they are trying to make it into a place which will eventually be an "underground" (hahaha) music venue which will regularly have cutting edge stuff going on. I looked at it because I know one of the owners and we are currently in negotiations for me to promote some events there. Unfortunately since it's not "open" so it is unstaffed, we can't have the SE get together there, because it would be a great spot for it.
Bobby Weir and The Midnites, at the Academy on 14th Street.
Then it turned into The Palladium.(Had some fun times, upstairs there, in The Mike Todd Room.) We had a cool memorial party there, downstairs; for Abbie Hoffman.
Now, it's a P.C. Richard.
The Clash. At Bond, Times Square. Currently the "New" Times Square.
Saw the Clash at Bond, and (earlier tour) (pre-club) Palladium. Palladium was still a concert hall for quite a few years before it became a club.
I never liked the Mike Todd room much, going to it only for No Entiendes ... the idea of a VIP room within a club seemed pointless right after Area, which was basically nothing but one gigantic VIP room (and no VVIP room within it, unless you count the all-handicapped bathroom stalls).
I think PC Richards was Luchows, and Trader Joe's was Palladium/Julian's Billiards/Carmelita's Reception House/Disco Donuts.
Alan....I think you're right about PC Richards/Luchow
Despite Bond being HUUUUUGE, demand was so high for the Clash nights that a riot broke out in Times Square: http://tinyurl.com/yflj64y
I called palladium as an nyu building. isn't tj's a tenant of the nyu "palladium" building?
Yes, it is. And I'm PC Richards is another NYU tumor.
Clash at Bond was incredible. The promoter actually oversold it, Joe decided to play the extra shows to satisfy demand. Not sure how true that is, but that's the way he told it. I also saw the Dead Kennedy's there early on, a very cool all girl band opened up, can't remember their name?
On another note, just hooked up a blu-ray dvd that connects to the internet. Not only great for streaming net flix, but you can connect to youtube and watch a lot of these great shows we are talking about on your flat screen.
The Peppermint lounge after closing on 46th street opened up at 100 5th avenue. Saw a great Iggy show there where he stopped playing and made the promoter come down and throw money into the crowd.
Jane Street "Rock Hotel" Bad Brains/Beastie Boys(when they were punk) Now the Jane Street Hotel.
A7 (7th Street@ A) now Niagara To many to list.
McGarrigle Sisters and half the folk-rock community. Bottom Line 1994.
Heavy emphasis on rock and punk here so I'll put in a plug for the folk rock community. One of the best shows I ever saw was billed as a McGarrigle Sisters gig. I think I paid $10 or $20 for a ticket. The late Kate McGarrigle's ex Loudon Wainwright showed up to play as well. As did her son Rufus Wainwright who was just on the cusp of fame at the time. Her daughter Martha Wainwright made an appearance as well.
(Loudon wrote a song when Rufus was a baby called "Rufus is a tit man." I think he sort of called that one wrong...)
Incidentally, Emmy Lou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton were in town recording "Trio 2," so Emmy Lou and Linda dropped by to do a couple numbers as well.
It was a great evening. Sorry to see that Kate passed in January.
Street Punk 1974, Kenny's Castaways. Hard to be a garage band in an area without garages. No to mention struggling neighborhood musicians trying to make it in the shadows of all the great ones.
glamma, I was at that Sonic Youth show at McCarren Pool also. It was the last show ever there, what a great venue. Recently met guitarist Lee Renaldo at a closing reception for his show at an art gallery in Williamsburg. Turns out he and I both lived in the same building on Pearl St (The Bindery) many years ago.
I saw Flipper play (at 5am!!) at A7A on 2nd Ave near E. 2nd St, the annex to the A7 club (afterhours club at SE corner of A and 7th). Breakfast at the Kiev (now gone) after. A7A is now a ministorage warehouse.
30 years: I saw Peter Frampton play a benefit recently in the ex-CBGBs/Varvatos store, they removed all the clothes and set up a stage. His bus was parked by the back door on dead-end Extra Place.
glamma: (le) poisson rouge is the old Village Gate. I go there often. I have tickets to see Florence + the Machine there, one of my favorite new bands.
30 years: Ask you buddy if they need another investor for their subterranean space, as I am looking for some more music-related investments, and it is around the corner from my new apartment.
Wiki excerpt on the A7 Club: "The club operated without a liquor license and was often raided by police."
I remember they had a double door system to get in and keep the cops out. Guess it didn't work too well.
Probably was my favorite club in NYC at the time. No pretension, just one hardcore band after another, starting around 2am and going until 6 or 7 am.
Now it is just another bar, Niagara.
Modern. I don't meet many people who(outside of the "regulars") have ever been or heard about A7. We undoubtedly have "met", I was also at that Flipper show(the annex was actually called 2+2). They also played the Mudd club and cb's on that tour. I was in one of the hardcore bands that played endlessly at A7 and was also living down there in 82...lol. I was in "Cause for Alarm", perhaps you saw us play?lol.
Niagara is actually owned by Jesse Malin who was in the HC band "Heart Attack" then later had a bit of "fame" with Degeneration.
Joni Mitchell Bitter End 1968 now Other End
McAuley Schenker Group, the New Ritz (now Studio 54). Opening for the opener, with 20 people in the room, a new band named "The Black Crowes".
> No, Barney Frank did not just detroy housing.
Thats D Generation
He also part-owned Coney Island High.
And D Generation wasn't much known outside NYC... Malin actually got more fame from his solo records with Ryan Adams
Strokes at Baby Jupiter (they were the house band)... 2000.
Baby Jupiter is a french restaurant now.
glad someone mentioned coney island high aka green door aka boy bar. i saw many local bands there one highlight being the lunachicks.
i can't remember seeing anyone worthwhile at the continental divide but i am sure i did at one point or another.
Ramones, Jesus and Mary Chain, Husker Du, Cure etc etc in 80s at Old Ritz (now Webster Hall).
Pixies in 80s at Old New Ritz (54th St?)
Myriad bands at Tramps (Meters shows, anyone?). Tramps was a great venue.
New Order/Echo at the Pier
oh and Tom Tom Club at The World on E 3rd (?) sometime in the late 80s. Long gone. Think it was near the Hells Angels HQ. All very fuzzy.
I used to go to Tramps a lot. I saw Morphine there in the mid-90s. That was a great band to see live -- they had a saxophonist who could play two saxes at once, one out of each corner of his mouth.
"glad someone mentioned coney island high aka green door aka boy bar. i saw many local bands there one highlight being the lunachicks. "
Remember the twins who worked the door? I heard they ended up in porn.
The N.Y.U.nification of East 14th Street! Traders. Richards.
Tramps was great, with a very low ceiling with major pipage downstairs in the dressing room area. Saw a great Willie Nelson show there. Jorma.
I thought Tramps was turned into an Irish-themed bar eons ago ... ? Or did it relocate from its east-of-Union Square site?
Tramps was on West 21st Street, wasn't it?
Vassar Clements, Levon Helm and Peter Rowan: "Tribeca Blues", on Warren Street. Haven't been down that street in a while, don't know what's there now.
Maybe I have them confused, but I think that was Squat.
coney island high was one of the most exciting places in the world to me when i was a teenager... if there were still open, i'm sure i would still go!
another one - marion's continental - becoming the east village outpost of a williamsburg mexican restaurant
speaking of the "Old Ritz", I'm pretty sure I saw The Church (and APB and 54-40) there in 1988. Someone actually nailed Steve Kilbey in the head with A Milky Way bar!
Reggae lounge, what did that turn into?
tramps was 21st i think. i saw elastica there. she was so out of her mind on something. but still awesome.
It was on W.21st street...Near 6th ave.
Before Reggae Lounge it was Rock Lounge. Not sure, but I think the fakey French bistro Cercle Rouge.
Tramps was on E. 15th or E. 16th, just off Irving Place, before that. I pretty much only went there for Mod Mondays, a dance night (no bands).
SOBs is the only place in existence? What about the original Knitting Factory, whats there now?
can't remember - I was stoned
Tramps was at 125 East 15th.
http://www.nytimes.com/1988/08/27/arts/tramps-leaves-15th-st-for-a-soho-reopening.html?pagewanted=1
Thanks, NYCDreamer! So (assuming the SoHo thing ever happened) they moved from place to place, like ...
I guess it never made it to SoHo...
http://www.nytimes.com/1989/11/10/arts/blues-at-tramps.html?pagewanted=1
Yes, two locations for Tramps: original and final location.
What was the name of that small club, I think it was on Third Ave. maybe in the 80s; during the late 1980s/early 1990s? It was a long room, with a bar in front and a stage in the back. I saw Commander Cody there, too.
On E. 86th, I think off Third, was a little club called "the 80s" ... ?
"I thought Tramps was turned into an Irish-themed bar eons ago ... ? Or did it relocate from its east-of-Union Square site?"
Tramps became centro fly, a popular dance club, I want to say about 99-00.
I saw Groove Collective a few months before the switch.
Did we forget to mention Bottom Line?
Lonestar and Lonestar Cafe (there were 2 locations, don't remember exact names)
Manny's Car Wash
Hogs & Heifers uptown
Okay anyone going to admit they saw the Divine Miss M at the Tubs in '72. Really wanted to go but alas show started too late and was still under something approximating curfew.
Yo La Tengo at Thread Waxing Space, maybe '94?
somewhereelse: Was Manny's on the upper east side?
Ray Davies, first solo tour:" Storyteller". 1996. Westbeth Theater, Bank Street.
ah the westbeth.
Truth - Since you started these threads, I feel compelled to respond to your last posting... I've seen many, many shows here in NYC at venues that don't exist anymore... Too many to list. BUT your last posting... maybe we sat next to each other??? Here is my stub from Ray Davies at the Wesbeth in 96. It is such a small world!
http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/ad94/avery_029/?action=view¤t=IMG_0002.jpg
Ray played at the tiny Webster Theater in Hartford last Saturday.
Hello Ray fans!
I thought you would be on here soon, Avery. Did you also go see Ray and Pete at The Academy on W. 43rd Street? Those were great shows.
Hey Truth! Nope, but saw Ray again at Westbury Music Fair (now called something else) on Long Island in 1997 I think, and also the Kinks at Jones Beach Theater a long time ago (can't remember the year.) I used to LOVE the Academy... I'd sit upstairs in the balcony ... it was one of my favorite spots to see shows.
avery: I think you are referring to the last Kinks concert, at Westbury. ( Before Ray went out on "The Storyteller" tour, to accompany his book: "X-RAY").
Hey Truth, I uploaded the stubs (yeah I keep a book with a lot of my old ticket stubs)... and the Kinks show was Jones Beach in 93, and the Ray show was at Westbury Music Fair in 97. :) Here's the stubs:
http://s925.photobucket.com/albums/ad94/avery_029/?action=view¤t=IMG_0006.jpg
Wasn't the last N.Y. Kinks show performed at Westbury? Was Jones Beach before that show? Where was the last N.Y. Kinks show?
A lot of Kinks action in the early 90s. A lot of Ray shows/tours since the Storyteller tour.
Are you the "Avery" who is one of the N.Y. area Ray fans? If you are, you know who I am. I probably heard your name from F. L. You may have been introduced to me by F.L.
Give me the full name of the big Kinks/Ray fan: F. L.
I saw the Kinks at Carnegie Hall in 1970 or 71. My girlfriend and I had front row tickets and my mother made me a periwinkle blue velvet "granny" skirt to wear with one of those lacy Edwardian looking tops that were fashionable at the time. The concert was great: "Lola" (one of forever favorite songs), "Apeman" etc. Night was memorable for something else, on the way uptown my a guy exposed himself to me and my girlfriend on the subway. (Yes, in those days pre-teenage girls took the train by themselves even at night. Ironically crime was much more of a problem than it is now.)
> somewhereelse: Was Manny's on the upper east side?
3rd ave, 87/88. It was "the" blues club in town (and that used to mean something).
Its an fing popeyes now!
somewhereelse: You always come to my memory rescue. That's the place.
Liz: Love "Apeman", I have a special Apeman dance that I do to that song.Back in 1996, when Ray did those shows at Westbeth; I went out to dinner with him and some friends. He asked me which song I wanted him to do for the next show. I requested "Art Lover". He still hasn't sung that for me, but he always gives me a beautiful "Days".
Avery: Are you on the road, following Ray, now? Ask F.L.: who pinched Ray's ass while he was onstage doing his Max bit; at the Irving Plaza show a few years ago. That was me. Every once in a while, I like to be in the audience with the fans. Then I can be naughty. Ray quite enjoyed it. He went with it and made it part of that show with his reaction.
Hey Truth! I'm not the same person you are thinking of. I'm just a music lover who enjoys going to shows. Thanks for starting this thread.. I love the stories and reminisces from everyone.
I thought it would be fun. You should get a prize for being the 100th comment.
Since you have a stub-collection, and a good memory: is there anything that was left out, here?
