Check out this nice 3000 sq ft Soho loft asking $5K: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/rental/633480-coop-458-broadway-soho-new-york The catch is that it's a furnished summer rental. However, I'm sure there's at least one SE person out there whose lease is up June 1 and wouldn't mind transfering an October 1 schedule. So why not spend the summer in Soho? Besides the obvious downside of having to put your stuff in storage for a few months in a two-sided move, you'll also have to deal with the depression caused by downgrading to a true $5K place once summer is over.
