Garden apartment security

I recently found a nice garden floor rental in a very safe Brooklyn neighborhood. The only problem is the front windows do not have bars protecting them. The broker showing the apartment showed me a security system that was already installed, I would just have to pay the monthly fee. Is this a normal? Just looking for thoughts from some of you out there more familiar with garden rentals. At a glance, it seems to me like most other houses in the neighborhood have bars protecting the garden floor windows.
