Every LIC thread sounds like a bunch of Toyota Yaris owners trying to convince themselves they bought a kick-ass car.

This cracks me up, too, from Arris Loft's FaceBook page: "Long Island City has been named by New York Magazine as the Next Hot Neighborhood...."

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Arris-Lofts/53297829847?v=info

They quote a 1980 article to try to get people to buy apartments that sit directly on the railyard. There were barely computers in 1980, never mind FaceBook.

Some people will fall for anything....

Oh god, the "je suis francais" arsehole is back.

I like that one, too, bjw - it's a school, educating people. You should try attending one.

And it's also nowhere near my house.

But if you must, here's a picture of where I live:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=West+52nd+Street,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&ll=40.763536,-73.985174&spn=0.002413,0.008755&sll=40.718727,-73.959321&sspn=0.008961,0.013797&layer=c&cbll=40.763537,-73.985177&panoid=fBtOnvttKYquNuSpcxeMNw&cbp=11,142.46,,0,-11.9&z=17

and here's the building's website:

http://ellingtonnyc.com/

Best of luck to you, "Je suis francais" "part Argie" who lives in a two-bedroom apartment in the hinterlands of Brooklyn, and STILL blogs about Manhattan real estate.

Do they even let you into Manhattan, Frenchie?

Oh dear, keep it together Esteban. I just posted a photo of some curbside trash on your street. You can obviously dish it out, but can't really take it. It's all in good fun. I mean, none of the photos you posted are pretty either, but I'm not sure what your point is. Tranqui!

"I just posted a photo of some curbside trash on your street."

Uhm, bjw - I think that you will find trash on the street on trash day throughout the world. Your Argentine passive-aggressive nature is rearing its ugly head again. "Je suis francais...."

Wait, lemme barf.

Here's a picture of ivy on my street:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=West+52nd+Street,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&ll=40.753914,-73.963062&spn=0.002414,0.008755&sll=40.718727,-73.959321&sspn=0.008961,0.013797&layer=c&cbll=40.753916,-73.963062&panoid=NDXz4ojyiKE_Nd-uhA2xhQ&cbp=11,304.36,,0,0&z=17

And if you go to Canada I'm sure you can find pictures aplenty of trash on Yonge Street, stretching as it does from one end of the country to another.

You wanna dish some trash, stop your lying and deceitful and dishonest ways. Crawl back under your rock, get over your "je suis francais" crap, and come back out when it's dark, and you're safe from the sunlight.

Really.

Yikes, Steve. Such an aggressive response might lead one to think you take this LIC thing way too seriously. Isn't this all in good fun? Or do you stay up at night thinking of ways to disparage the neighborhood on an anonymous internet message board?

About the trash on your street - maybe it isn't trash day and that's just the nature of West 52nd. Totally assuming that it just so happened to be trash day, and Google just so happened to be taking photos that day. But anyway, it ain't lying or deceitful. It was just a link to a photo! Photographic evidence!

it's always interesting when ignorant people mock their intellectual superiors for being knowledgeable. i am always dying to ask, do you feel that you know something about what i said that would render what i said erroneous? or do you dismiss what i said BASED on your own ignorance of it because it's something you feel you clearly don't need to know as an educated person? of course i can't just ask any asshole this in real life, that would be rude.

No ivy, but a very nice park across the street, fool.

Been to France. Lots of times. Dated a few Frenchmen, too. Not worth nearly what you think you are.

My family dates back in Brooklyn to about 1840. The Vanderbilts lived there for a time, too, though they were originally from Jersey, via Staten Island, circa 1660.

Yes, a very nice park surrounded by a Hustler club and the West Side Highway!

"Been to France. Lots of times. Dated a few Frenchmen, too. Not worth nearly what you think you are."

Not sure what you're saying with that last bit, but if "nobody likes the French" why did you date some? Why did you even go?

They're cheap and easy.

"Yes, a very nice park surrounded by a Hustler club...."

Though it's not my taste, it causes no one any harm."

"...and the West Side Highway!"

Apparently they haven't let you out of Brooklyn in a long time. The West Side Highway is long gone, that stretch of 12th Avenue - as it's called - is actually very nice, actually, close to the Intrepid Museum and a nice park along the Hudson.

Fool.

We are awesome dates, it's true. Sorry it didn't work out though. But maybe you shouldn't date people if "nobody likes them."

"The West Side Highway is long gone"

Wow, another thing you're wrong about. It's very much still there. In fact, here's a sign just down the block from that other photo I posted. Do you even live in this city?

"Your sign is old."

Maybe you can count them for us, but I believe most signs still say Westside Highway. Almost no one calls it anything but. Same with the Triboro Bridge. People still look at you funny if you call it the RFK. Regardless, not sure what your point is. It's the West Side Highway, but call it what you want - it's still there.

Here's another good shot for our photo thread here:

That's great Steve. Most people still call it the West Side Highway. But either way, doesn't change the fact that it's not "long gone" as you claimed.

"BTW you've been officially hidden. You're just too unbearable to contemplate any further."

No worries. I'm sorry the photos I posted are that unbearable to you.

"Oh, and FYI - that picture is (again) nowhere near my house,"

It's your street. Are you claiming that the photos you posted are of the street LICC lives on? You can certainly poke fun at him and say yes, but why so offended when someone does the same with West 52nd?

lowery you're right about the ethnic make up of many americans, but i meant stuff like this

"In the American Revolution, Lafayette served as a major-general in the Continental Army under George Washington. Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he still managed to organize a successful retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war he returned to France to negotiate an increase in French support. On his return, he blocked troops led by Cornwallis at Yorktown while the armies of Washington and those sent by King Louis XVI under the command of general de Rochambeau, admiral de Grasse, and admiral de Latouche Tréville prepared for battle against the British."

I was thinking you meant lafayette as well, lucille, and I always think of the statue in Place des les Etats-Unis (how do you spell it?) in Paris, as well as the pride people in la Lorraine have in Lafayette being from Metz, how they're so happy to point Americans to Lafayette landmarks. And when I was in grade school, it was still being taught that the French were our greatest ally in the quest for independence. That was before French-bashing became socially acceptable among frustrated rednecks who felt compelled to re-channel the types of attitudes and remarks they used to freely express against non-Caucasians now to people ethnically virtually identical to them. Everyone needs an enemy, I suppose. And I have never experienced the cliched animosity and rudeness from French people in France that I'm so tired of hearing people repeat as though it's an ad from their television programming that they must repeat in order to be like what they think everyone else is like who may be watching the same television program, etc.

lucille and lowery, thanks. I would not quite call Steve a redneck, but it is pretty surprising to hear that kind of garbage from, of all people, a translator specializing in Romance languages. Unfortunately, I don't see hating ever going totally out of style with some.

stevejhx, you made yourself famous on Street easy for your class discrimination but these comments about the French are downright racist! How can you live in NY and not be much tolerant to the difference that make NY so great? You just revealed a side of yourself that makes me despise you as much as LICComment! What a fvcking asshole you are!

"class discrimination...."

Really? I thought I was quite proudly lower-middle class, and have made a point of saying that my father grew up in the projects - IN LONG ISLAND CITY!

But hey, if that's discrimination in your book, so be it!

"if your family has been in US for 10 generations, chances are, there's a French Canadian in there"

Nope. Not a one. Thank g-d.

Did you know that the French just classified themselves as the people in the world most susceptible to clinical depression? Psychosis is just a half-step behind.

Nice Steve. Your humanity shines through your comments. In the end, I'm just glad you're staying out of my country for good.

Long Island City or West 34th Street. Tough choice for living.

"again, badly educated ignorant retards. how does an american who knows and understands the history of their own country claim to hate "the french"?"

The French had a great part in our country's break away from the English, in fact, instrumental. And of all the founding fathers, it's not fair to single one out of the others but there is a reason Franklin is the $100.
And at the time of the revolution, people hated the French for not engaging the English fleet here in the states but their global bouts of water polo where doing the job spreading the English thin. And we ended up using the French in our treaty negotiations when we signed with the English and even the French at the time said it was a deal we couldnt pass up.

But let's not be delusional, the French helped us not just for "la fraternité de la liberté," but for French interests.
And French interests conflicting or the appearance of conflicting with us in recent times is just out of hypocricy, we see now how willing they'll get involved when their oil well is in jeopardy (Libya).

Though I'll agree it silly to hate just about any people(s), kneejerk nationalism we see is hardly an exclusive american symptom, it is quite global.

Ultimately , the world is equally retarded.

My favorite urban legend from the height of displeasure with France was this gem;
A supposed statement from French's mustard;

"We, at the French's Company, wish to put an end to statements that our product is manufactured in France. There is no relationship, nor has there ever been a relationship between our mustard and the country of France. Indeed, our mustard is manufactured in Rochester, NY.
The only thing we have in common is that we are both yellow."

The french have their share of rednecks, bigots, religous nutters (the rumours of godless europe are greatly exagerated), and hypocricy.

We, as in all matters, just get more press.

"M. Wells, a year-old Long Island City diner that earned wide acclaim for its unusual French Canadian fare, is set to close by the end of the month, according to a letter from its owners posted a on a food blog."

"M. Wells, Celebrated Queens Diner, to Close"

See, the french candians ARE indeed killing LIC.

truthskr, you're right of course. There are idiots of all creeds, colors, and countries. But I think it's more than just "silly" to hate an entire country and its people. I know you're not defending Steve here, but his comments here are downright ignorant to put it mildly.

No of course, I was actually defending my disdain with French government stances and positions of recent years.
And my mother is french.
But I was going further off topic, because the current topic is engaging Steve the wrong way and most on this board I believe have better wit than demonstrated.

Even Ahart, who I greatly disagree with politically though find him extremely witty and entertaining has descended to the over sniping, engaging in the mud and Im not surprised to find him gray. It's sad because there is talent on these boards,he particularly, though maybe he's just burned out which is not hard to believe on this forum.

I know its not possible, but if everyone posted here as if their real name and picture showed up as an avatar next to their post, this place would be much better.
I think pretending that it is would challenge everyone to be "more clever" and tactful.

Sorry, now I'm rambling.

M. Wells is wildly popular and is moving. They couldn't agree to terms with the landlord.

Crossroads was a diner that is now becoming a Peruvian restaurant.

Lucky Mojo's closed a while ago and is being replaced by Alewife.

Old Man steve- seldom right and wrong again . . .

i never said otherwise. of course everyone acts in their self interest.

since no one seems to be really offended by the conspiracy theories, i'm just going with it. did you ever think that when france built the reactor in iraq in the late 70s the people who made that deal were pretty sure that either israel or iran would take that thing out before it did anyone harm? i've always thought that, that is was a very smart and relatively safe deal for them, it was just easy money and nothing more.

So, LICC, what you're saying is that there are no new restaurants in Long Island City - just the closed ones are being replaced by other ones, that will be closed, soon, too.

Yay! Yay!

One diner, one bar and one restaurant closed. They are all being replaced with restaurants. In addition, three new restaurants are coming in. This is in addition to 5-10 new places that opened in the past year or so.

But in steve's math, there are no net new restaurants in LIC. No wonder he couldn't hack it as an accountant.
