Finding a sublet in Greenwich/West Village/Chelsea

Hello, I am relocating to New York from CA and I'm looking for an apartment. I have read that the best way to find one is to sublet first and then look for an apartment once physically in the city. I was wondering if anyone could share their advice and best resources for finding a sublet in NY (would prefer Greenwich/West Village/Chelsea area's but not mandatory)? Thank you - all help/advice/tips are very much appreciated!
