SBOX pop-up devices - pass inspection?

Was thinking of using http://the-sbox.com/us/products/power-box/ in our kitchen renovation to discretely put some power plugs into the island. Our electrician has initially advised that this is a "gray area" in the NYC electrical code and since electrical inspection comes late, we are being advised against using. Wondering if anyone has prior experience and can speak to whether these were fine or not, if this is a total luck of the draw thing, if we can get some sort of advance pre-approval one way or the other...? Thanks for any help you can provide.
