Serving as Own Broker

I'm a lawyer, and looking to buy an apartment in New York. I was thinking of serving as my own broker, since my understanding is that it's possible to split the 6% broker fee (which means I'd have around $20K more to spend on an apartment, given what we're looking at). I saw an old thread, but has anyone done this recently? I'm particularly interested in whether seller's brokers refused to work with you and/or split the 6% (or lower the selling price by 3%)? As well as any other upsides or downsides.
