Commute from NYC to LIJ

Any have experience doing a commute from NYC to LIJ? I'll be working nights, so driving doesn't seem like a good idea as I would be hitting rush hour traffic with everyone leaving the city to go back to LI. Thinking I could just live near Penn and take the LIRR to Great Neck. Any similar situations?
