Checking contractor references

I'm looking to renovate my pre-war bathroom. I have a contractor recommended by the Super who has worked in the building. This is helpful as I know he has gotten board approval, etc. He has been very responsive, I have a good bid from him and need to check references. Is it appropriate to ask the contractor to see a bathroom he has renovated in person, rather than simply relying on references. Thanks in advance.
