gas line replacement in prewars

Just saw a New York magazine article (recent, but do ot have link) that addressed a new concern that some prewars have had to shut off their gas lines and replace them. The years of renovations or moving the gas ranges have caused leaks/cracks and ConEd had safety concerns. Has anyone heard about this firsthand or has any comments?
