Discussion about
we really like an apartment on the corner of columbus and 70s (not 72nd or 79th) whose bedroom windows are facing the avenue. it's on the 4th floor and the windows are reasonabe in terms of sound insulation (can hear the bus engine). we are concerned about the noise level in the morning rush hour and at night. we are not currently living in this neighborhood so have no idea how bad it can get. really concerned about traffic jam, honking, and fire trucks. can anyone tell us how it is there? thanks a lot.
forgot to mention that the reason we are concerned is that we have a toddler. I know this area is not going to be quiet quiet but don't want to move in and the very next morning find out we made a huge mistake. thanks.
a little insight, not complete though. I live on columbus, slightly higher floor. Most police noise is centered around 79th. This is where they pull EVERYONE over for runnng the red light at 81st and 80th, then chase them to 79th or 78th. Police and fire truck noise is deminimus between 74-77. You might want to check on garbage truck noise. If your corner is where the bus stop is, don't do it, if a block away, better. East side of columbus is quieter than west side plus you would get afternoon light. A think that renovated building on the NE corner of 76th or 75th would be pretty quiet(relatively speaking).
patient09 thanks a lot for the insight. the apt I am looking at is below 74th. anything I need to be careful there? thanks.
A bit south of my specific knowledge, but I do believe it gets a bit noiser around 72. Ask 67, this is much closer to his hood. Good Luck..peace.
ok. thanks.
There are usually traffic jams during the evening rush from 70th to Lincoln Center.
how about in the morning? thanks a lot.
komin,
I used to live on 74/Columbus, though a bit further in towards CPW on 74th. It was exceedingly quiet there obviously, though I can tell you that even Columbus at that level is pretty good relative to other avenues. I've lived on Madison as well, which is quite noisy (esp at night with delivery/garbage trucks). The good thing is there are few bars/late-night hangouts in that immediate vicinity. You've got Lenny's which shuts down relatively early, Pioneer (same), an Indian and sushi place (both pretty quiet with no outdoor seating, if I recall), a deli, and a few other establishments, but nothing that really stands out noise-wise. Mornings aren't too bad either, though there is always a fair amount rush-hour traffic on any major avenue. Good luck!
thank you bjw2103.
The area is clear when I leave around 7-7:30 AM. Don't know about later.
I walk down Col. every morning. It's a nightmare (noise) bet. 8 and 930 (though not as bad as Amsterdam). Dies down after 10am, not bad in the afternoons. Noise is not an issue on weekends.
given what hsw9001 and nyc10023 have said, I guess it probably is fine as my child wakes up around 7am everyday. not worried about traffic going through because that is just sort of like a background noise in the apartment. was afraid of angry people honking.
Honks not as common on Col. as on Ams. & Bway.
Is anyone familiar with the building at 112 W. 72 St? I am considering getting an apt there.
There really can be a big difference between lower and higher floors noise-wise. The fourth floor is pretty low, and you'll likely get a considerable amount of 'people' noise in addition to the traffic (you know, someone just hanging out yaaking loudly on their cell--that sort of thing). Personally, I'd prefer a higher floor, above six if possible.
One great weapon in the battle against noise is the wonderful SleepMate white noise machine. It does wonders at blocking out everything from noisy neighbors to traffic. And what isn't completely blocked out is at least made more tolerable.
so is sex and booze
Actually higher floors can sometimes have about the same amount of noise if you live in a narrow street or a "canyon" with tall buildings on either side. We live o nthe 18th floor of a high rise, and the noise reverberates against the buidling facades. While not as loud as on the 4th floor, say, it still is pretty noisy where we are.

Good thing the UWS has no, uh, deliveries or garbage trucks.
In the end, side street vs. avenue is BY FAR the most important factor (and not being on a bus cross street).
At night, Madison IMHO is quieter, as there is almost nothing that is open.. thats a pretty dead street at 8pm, let alone 10 pm.
Columbus in the 70s isn't exactly a hot spot, but definitely more than Madison. And I know... I slept at 73 & Columbus recently...

Well, my bedroom window was right on Madison, and I can tell you, many of the retail spots take deliveries in the wee AM hours. There may be next to zero pedestrian traffic, but in terms of sleeping, it's not nearly as quiet as you think.
Hi, Does anyone live or know the noise level on 96th and columbus avenue (upper west side). I'm looking for an apartment in that neighborhood.
