I love Asphalt Green on York and E 91st...great pool, cardio equipment and classes, clean and well maintained, great staff, reasonable prices, very diverse membership (it's a non profit that does a lot of work in the community), complete lack of the meat market feeling. Also, never crowded (I go in the mornings or early evenings and mostly do cardio); I think the slightly out of the way location keeps people away. LA Sports Club on E 61st is also very nice, in a class of its own (chi-chi) and you will pay accordingly.

really depends where you are.... you're not going to the 60s if you're on the 90s, I figure.

63rd street equinox is great.. not too crowded (mostly housewives go). pool and hot tubs... extremely well kept.

They're opening another equinox on like 2nd ave at 75th as well.... the 85th street one is a little old, worn, and crowded.

Thank you smsliu & nyc10022.

I'm looking for something in the 80s/70s. I hear Asphalt Green is fabulous, but, it's a bit far for me. Have heard good things about LA Sports & 63rd St equinox, so will check them out.

Thanks again, guys.

I was a member of NYHRC for 2 yrs. There is one on 76th and York. The facilities were fine but it was too much of an older crowd for me. Equinox definitely has more of a younger clientele during the after-work hours.

I think the Equinox at 2nd/74th is now open, but I haven't seen the facilities yet.

NYSC on 76th between 1st & 2nd has just been remodeled, and although it's heavily utilized, has everything you could want/ need in a gym...except for space. If you feed off of the energy of others, and are not necessarily interested in using the gym as social venue, NYSC on 76th is affordable and effective.

If you can afford equinox AND SCLA, then equinox is better if you want more locations but SCLA/RSC KILLS it and any other gyms in NYC save Chelsea Piers or one of the NYACs in terms of size, amount of equipment available, classes, etc. AND it has the pretty locker rooms of Equinox. So if you actually want to work out, definitely SCLA.

LA Sports... HORRIBLE. Dingy, dated, and location is pretty far out of the way. DOn't know about the other location, but that east east 61 one just not good.

You might want to check out the new equinoox on 2nd ave. Plans looked good, but I never saw it built.

NYSCs are waaaaaaaaaay overcrowded compared to equinox. THats what you're paying for.

I said NYAC, who said anything about NYSC? And the SCLA on 61st is a gym where one can work out if more than two people want the same machine. All equinox locations are generally not good if multiple serious workout buffs are there at once.

Uh, the post right above yours?

"NYSC on 76th between 1st & 2nd"

"And the SCLA on 61st is a gym where one can work out if more than two people want the same machine. All equinox locations are generally not good if multiple serious workout buffs are there at once."

First off, I don't think the equinoxes have multiple serious workout buffs, and I consider that a great thing.

But, in terms of equipment... Equinox at 63 has the most of any (especially for its size). Having wice as much doesn't mean anything if you have 5x the people. You pay specifically so it isn't crowded.

And, as I said, SCLA is pretty gross inside.

SCLA is never any more crowded than any equinox, and if that is "gross", you are ultra-high maintenance.

> SCLA is never any more crowded than any equinox,

You've clearly never been to the 63rd. And, yes, SCLA is worn down. But, since you've never been to the good gym, not sure what you have to compare it to.

A friend (female) got a free week membership to SCLA and never went back after the first day because it was crappy. And this is someone who was NYSC (so its not like its a super high standard). I also lived 2 blocks away and watched it deteriorate since opening.

I assume this is a closed issue?

I have been to and worked out in both SCLAs in NYC, the one in BH, and the Reebok clubs in Canary Wharf and the UWS, and barring Chelsea Piers and the ony NYAC I toured, I have never seen nicer gyms, and they are all FAR nicer than the nicest newest NYSC. One might never go back because they are all at least twice the price of NYSC, but none are "gross".

And I have belonged to Gold's, Crunch and NYSC in my day and been to many of those, too, so I know about what I speak.
