1) 333WEA, 12/14A. Shows much better than in the photographs. Something about the lighting gives a yellowish tinge to all the rooms. Combination of 2 6-room apts. Good light, feels open on all sides, glimpses of the river from west-facing rooms. When this apt was renovated, they didn't strip all the details - for example, most bathrooms retain the old fixtures & wall tiles but have had their floors replaces (somewhat incongruous combo of bisazza glass tiles with the original white subway tiles) Extremely gracious master bedroom suit with a massive closet/dressing room/mbath combo consisting of 2nd kitchen & maid's. Real, solid staircase - though I'm not a fan of the iron banisters. Overall, one of the better duplexes I've seen but I'm not sure that in this market, the space justifies a 6m price tag - considering the asking prices for the 6 rooms elsewhere in the bldg. The board has supposedly nixed all plans for proposed duplexes after this one was created. I don't think I could deal with the manned elevator. Conversation is often the last thing I seek as I come home. 2) 411 WEA 6AB - complete gut renovation of 2 former 4 (?) room apts in a classic Art Deco building. Not a bad flow, but the introduced architectural elements are inconsistent with each other. One downfall of most combos in Art Deco bldgs is the juxtaposition of step-up and step-down rooms next to each other. In the living room, dining room, EIK, and den expanse, there seem to be too many step-ups and downs for a gracious flow. The rotunda with crown mouldings is not a good addition to the Art Deco lines of this apt. This apt was never really lived in, and so the many built-ins exhibit little wear and tear. Not sure that the modern kitchen with wood cabs and dark (soapstone?) counter is the best look for an Art Deco home. Kids' rooms are cute, and well-decorated (might steal some ideas from them) though of course this isn't what you're buying. Good light, open exposures. [less]

That staircase at 333WEA does look good. Wouldn't have thought it would fit in that space. And right, the banisters look too California-tract-house.
Always liked 411WEA for some of the one-bedrooms on higher floors, with setback terraces and river views. A couple of duplexes with tightly-curving staircases that look like sets from a 1930s movie.
regarding conversation, I've lived in a building with a manned elevator. Truth is that often the elevator guys don't want to talk either and there's really not much pressure to. I felt awkward about it at first, but got used to it pretty quickly.
