Discussion about
I've noticed a building marketed as luxury using their maintenance men as doormen. Is this tacky? How prevalent is this?
If they're only filling in for the regular doorman's lunch or smoke break, then it's not 'tacky' at all. It's actually quite common.
So, I plunk down two million dollars for a Condo, invite friends and family and a guy wearing sneakers, and a maintenance shirt greets them? I saw this in a new building on Riverside. Perhaps the developer sells the building on low common charges and then cuts corners on service.. You never see this on Park Avenue.
So, what do you expect? A second uniformed doorman waiting in the wings all day only to materialize when the main doorman breaks for lunch or to take a leak? Come on. Talk about unnecessary expenses.
I'm sure your friends and family will survive any perceived indignity.
I'm pretty sure the doormen on Park are required to wear Depends to avoid just such issues.
You get what you pay for!
That might be acceptable in a building with 100 units. These buildings are marketed based on the perception of luxury. It starts when you walk into the building. We're not talking West End Avenue coop here. I'm waiting for the back-up concierge to be in tank top and ripped jeans...
Actually you paid for what you got...
