For painters, I used Mike Kuhn of Mike's Painting. He is Manhattan based, very reasonably priced, and did a tremendous job on my place when I bought it. I had 'moldings galore' and used many different colors in my place. Mike did a fantastic job, and was also an 'all around good guy'. Trustworthy, honest, and finished within budgeted timelines.

Try him at (212) 874-2303

Roger - Did he do both the molding & the painting?

I also hear there are some places that can do the cutting for moldings outside of the apartment (after doing exact measurements in the apartment) Is that standard and does anyone know of any places that offer this for NYC?

My place had original moldings. There was one room that had some water damage to the crown molding, and Mike offerred to fix it up--however I was under a tight deadline to move in. So, no, he did not do the moldings...but call him and find out if he does.

If you are handy at all, look into the option for moldings being cut outside. Although not moldings, I did install plantation shutters throughout my place...at about 1/3 the cost that Janovic quoted...by using my own measurements and Blinds.com--called in sick to work one day and installed them all myself. Off topic, but if you can recall what they tought in high school shop, you can save $$$.

Good luck.

I would treat anyone who says they can do your moldings off site with a little skepticism. If they say they can, I would think the end result may be less than ideal.

I LOVE 'This Old House' & it was probably there that I saw how difficult it is to cut-in that second molding strip where they meet in the corner; my feeling is that cutting ON the site is the way to go.

the only way not to worry about cutting onsite is to add the corner crown molding. i've seen some very nice styles for that. this way the measurements do not have to be to the 1/8 of an inch accuracy and look fantastic.

Erik Nadoban and his crew. I can't recommend them highly enough. They did a big job for me after a busted roof drain rained water into my house. Totally reasonable prices, and a thorough bid with no overages. Lots of before & after pics here on his website:
