Discussion about
Mind you readers I use technical analysis to trade. I have been happily bullish these past 3 months as stocks enjoyed a vicious bear market rally. However the charts are looking a bit sickly lately. Key sectors such as housing, transportation and banking are starting to roll over. Sentiment indicators are flashing red as well. We can correct the techinical damage done but the odds are looking like... [more]

Technically, if the Dow fails to pierce the 12,200 level, it will signal a steep decline ahead.

Volume on up days remains < 50% of volume on down days. BEAR TRAP.

"Technically, if the Dow fails to pierce the 12,200 level, it will signal a steep decline ahead"

Bro, do you really believe this stuff???? REALLY? So if it hits 12,219 but doesn't go up 1 more point, everything will collapse? Why not the 12,210 level or the 12,220 level? Why not 11,995? Why not 12,220.31415927?

C'mon, man, I thought you were actually somewhat intelligent.

It's helpful to discuss what will or will not happen if we don't "pierce" the 12,200 level, but why can't technical analysis tell us if we will or will not actually pierce the 12,200 level to begin with?

My ear is ringing. Does that mean we are close to the piercing this morning? Also, my dog is barking, maybe a tsunami is coming. You know, animal sense might be a good way to verify technical analysis.

I think you have to re-read what I wrote, swe - I wrote "bear trap," did I not?

Do you know what that is?

As soon as it crossed 12.200 it was headed right back up to attempt a new high. It might even get there, but on absolute anemic volume.

Rumors on the Street are for a 30% - 40% collapse before year-end. That is why volume is so low - nobody's selling yet. Today's job figures point in the direction of the future. Unless you think that stocks demand a 30% rise in prices while the economy was grinding to a halt.

because he is legally blind and the only young people who spend time with him are the disabled and disfigured prostitutes he hires thinking the last few generations just look like that because of all the hormones in our milk. when in fact, somewhat decent looking prostitutes at the service he uses generally avoid him and send their unfortunate co workers instead. because in addition to being blind and stupid, he is also cheap. and into reeeealy weird stuff.

From Asia to Europe to the U.S., all the important economic indicators are rolling over. Some
blame the Japanese tragedy; others, the weather. It is more than that. It is the result of policy
decisions. Economic growth could slow to a crawl well into early next year. The stock market
isn't priced for that. Analysts will cut their earnings estimates. There is 20% downside risk
from the market's intraday May high

If earnings are double what they were in Q1 of 2009, then, yes, it is. Ignore the crowd - the crowd is almost always wrong when it buys on euphoria or sells on panic - right now people are selling on panic. GL.

I read a quote this morning to the effect of "People are selling based on worries about what MIGHT happen, not based on anything that actually has happened". You saw the same thing with US banks in early 2009 ("Nationalization!!!!") that's happening with Euro banks now - emotional panic selling without any rational, objective analysis to back up the "sell" thesis at these already depressed levels.

We'll see if you are right. Interestingly enough I am not bearish specifically because of the Euro, but more because the stock averages are at all time highs on a Schiller cycally adjusted P.E. ratio and the continued deleveraging by the U.S. consumer. Bascically I don't see enough risk priced into stocks to justify the investment. If we came down 20-40% I would reconsider.

Anybody who is objective/rational/unemotional can see that the sky is not falling & the world is not ending. The world economy will move forward; the Euro crisis will eventually be resolved; heck, even the US debt problem will be addressed over time. People will continue to go to work and produce goods and services; this will increase the world's collective wealth over time (which translates into higher stock prices in the long term).

Are stocks as great a bargain as they were in March 2009? Obviously not - but that doesn't mean they are overpriced now - it just means that March 2009 was the buying opportunity of a lifetime. Nobody ever became a billionaire by betting against humanity in the long term - but quite a few have become billionaires by betting on humanity.
