Discussion about
What's the building like? Would living on 86th St be a pain (crowds, noise, etc.)?

Which listing?
E 86th on York is not so hectic. It's not a quite side street but it's also not dead center commercial.
There are a few threads on the availabe RE.

East 86 is VERY commercial with big box chain stores. York & 86 has a bus stop right there, which can be good or bad.
My only real problem is that it's quite a walk to a subway.

444 East 86th has a bunch of apartments for sale, and they are willing to accept almost all offers. I havent seen 445, but I have been to a bunch of 'open houses' (= me and my wife plus a bored broker) at 444 and they were ok. Not to digress, but most of the 444 E 86th 2beds are actually junior 4's, however for the price they are looking more attractive these days.

can't comment on the actual apartments, but I can comment on the area and agree with falcogold1.

beholder's big box comment is true at Lex (above the subway) and down to Third (BestBuy, Petco, all the drug store usual suspects, plus PC Richard just east of Third), but not at all true at York. The heavy foot traffic is really a Park to Third, maybe Second, thing, not a York and East End thing.

The long walk (or slow bus ride in crosstown traffic) to the subway is indisputable.
